Hyde.
Sad was the news which reached us from the front during the week when it became known that two more of our young men Earnest P. Howard and Allen J. Ramsay had offered up the supreme sacrifice. Ernest P. Howard was the only son of the L.ate Peter Howard, of "Ivy Bridge Farm," Hyde, and was educated at Hyde. On the death of bis father the management of the farm fell upon Ernest and he at once recognised his responsibilities, and before his enlistment the farm was a credit to liis energy and ability. His one endeavour was to have the best of stock, of which he waa a competent judge. And this no doubt led to his prosperity. He waa always very liberal to any charitable purpose and took great interest in patriotic work. However the war had not started long beforo he thought his place was bL the front and disposed of his farm and went away in the early reinforcements. Wounded at the Somme, he was soon back at the front, whers his death occurred on the 12th ult. Earnest, who was a straight forward, honest young man, was well respected by all who came in contact with him. He leaves one sister, Mrs S. C. Fache, of Dunedin. Allen J. Ramsay waa the oldest son of Mr Thomas Ramsay, of "Fairlea," Hyde, and was born and educated at Hyde. Allen had a very bright career at school, and was a perfect favourite in the district, being naturally bright and cheerful. He enjoyed being in whatever sport was going. Ever anxious to get to the front he was scarcely twenty years old when be enlisted and left in the twenty-first reinforcements.
The deepest sympathy of the district s felt for the parents and relatives of those young men.
Out of nineneen young men who left Hyde for the front seven have lost tbeir lives.
