"KEEPING FIT" STATESMEN'S HOBBIES. Sir William Bobertson's belief that the General Staff's ability to cope with all its tremendous problems is very largely due to " keeping fit" makes the recreations of our statesmen, on whom the brunt of the war also falls heavily, interesting reading to men who are suffering from war nerves and fatigue, probably because they do not " keep fit." With golf Mi- Lloyd George has maintained his fitness in" face of the hardest mental work. Give him a day off and he takes not to his club, but to his clubs. Golf is also Mr Bonar Law's favorite exercise. But his joy is a game of chess—in which, among amateurs, he is a master. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Eric C. Geddes, proclaims his favorite recreation as shooting and golf. But lie says he has played very little since lie was 17, and not at all for the last three years. Sir Edward Carson's physical recreations are officially stated to be riding, golf, and cycling. Lord Devonport divides his recreation between shooting, gardening, rowing, boating, and yachting. Lord lihondda, who was very useful with his fists at Cambridge, now finds the dearest delights of his spare moments in farming. Therein he resembles another Welshman. Lord Justice Vau"han Williams, who at a house party of his said to an intimate friend : " I don't know what you you would like to do; but I am going* to spread manure." The Speaker of the House of Commons indulges in tennis, and, like the late Sir Charles Dilke, is fond of a bout with the foils. - The late Mr Chamberlain did not believe in the necessity for any exercise beyond watching orchids grow and smoking strong cigars., and he remained very fit up to a good age; but Mr Gladstone attributed his fitness to systematic treefelling, and Lord Roberts remained young beyond the ordinary limits bv the "excellent open-air exercise of hunting. Sir Edward Clarke, a true veteran, drills with the volunteers. The Lord Mayor of London believes in a good walk. Diuer: " Who is that singing so dreadfully out of tune?'' Restaurant Proprietor : "It is niT wife." Diner : " Perhaps the accompanist plays out of tune." R.P. : "She _is accompanying herself!" Over a third of the "total population of Dublin consists of families living in a single room.
