Mount Ida Chronicle FRIDAY, OCT. 5, 1917.

On Sunday, a motor car, driven-by Mr Sinclair, of Ranfurly, with several passengers overturned near Kokonga. ■ Mrs Christie had her shoulder badly hurt and has gone to Dunedin for treatment, and Mr W. Hore received a slight injury to his knee. ' . ; On Wednesday a very heavy rainfall occurred ; all over the district. Yesterday morning 116 points were registered at Naseby.- Consequently all the creeks were in flood and the Taieri River very' high. ■' As lambing is general, tbe rain created a prettyheavy mortality among the newly born lambs.

We understand that a requisition is in circulation in the Kyeburn Riding asking their representative, Mr A. B. Mann (the county chairman) to,reconsider hisi intention to retire, add to again allow himself, to be placed in nomination.

The Waimea-Kumara and Mount Ida water-races, wnich render possible hydraulic mining in the Kumafa district, Westland, and the Naseby district, Central Otago, have during 1916 supplied seventy miners with water for sluicing, by which gold to the ap ■ proximate value of £14,683 was obtained. The cash received for water sold amounted to £2,609, and th 6 expenditure on the upkeep of the races was £3,462. These races are therefore not self-supporting, and ns allowance for interest on capital expenditure or depreciation has been made. During 1916 the average annual earnings per miner using . Government water, after deducting thei amount paid for the same, was £l7O, being less than during the previous year. From these earnings must be subtracted all expenditure, on plant and material, also rent and ether incidental expenses; it will thus be seen that the alluvial miners using Government water appear to be satisfied to work for less than the current rate of wages iin .other arduous occupations.—Mines Statement.

Private Harry Jacob is at present spending a couple of weeks with his friends, in search for health. He has spent some months in the Dunedin hospital kb the result of the wound he received to his foot and had to undergo several operations. He is looking well considering what ha has passed through and .hopes to" recover the use of his foot shortly, although ,he won't in the future be able to take his old place in the football field. He has to retarn to Dunedin for massage treatment, and will probably shortly go to Hanmer for a change.

a Mr G. Botting has disposed of his butchery business in Naseby to Mr George Provan, jun! We -wish him success.
