Dunedin, Thursday Afternoon. A public meeting has been held in Auckland to cou.ider the political situation. There was a demonstration in favoi of Sir George Grey, and a dissoluton was anticipated. The greatest unanimity prevail throughout the Province. No member who voted against the present Government will get a seat in the event of a dissolution. 'ihe .Vielbourne bookmakers are paying up. Thompson has paid over £21,000, including £iO,uoo to the owner of Chester. The public are backward. The Sydney elections have terminated slightly in favor of the Government, but they cannot comir.and a working majority. iaithful has been acquitted on the charge of attempting to assassinate Air. The Canterbury run clauses in tbe Lands Bill were warmly- -discussed, and were very strongly opposed by Sir (Jeorge Grey. The matter was an open one with Ministers. Ail. Larnach. voted for the ten years'lease, and the other Ministers against. 'lhe:rest of the clauses of the Bill did not cause much discussion, until a new clause (proposed by Mr. de Lautour) dealing with riparian rights, arid in purport similar to the clause in°Mr. Shepherd's Gold fields Act No 2 of 1876, was reached. Over this there was a long discussion, and on a division it was read a second time by a small majority, but before it could be added to the Bill Mr. Reid, who opposed it, by a majority of one, carried a motion for repotting progress. Sir (ieo Urey's answer to Mr. Stafford's question about Civil servants withholding information was very suggtstive. It was simply that the statement referred to was not made on the authority of the <*overnm nfc Several members of the Opposit on say they will be no'parties to an> further party contest,. but no reliance is placed on their statements.
