(Vrom our own correspondent.) Dunedin, Thursday Afternoon. The jury in Proudfoot's case retired at •10 o'clock last night, and, though thrice called into Court, are unable to agree. It is understood that eleven are in favor of an acquittal, but the twelfth is obstinate. The Judge told the jury the evidence would not justify them in convicting accused on the minor count. Popular feeling has been running very high during the past two days. Cable communication haa been interrupted since Monday last. The full text of Sir Or. Grey's ministerial statement has been published here, and gives satisfaction.

William Wilson, ex-Mayor of Christchureb, has been ordered to find £IOOO sureties to keep the peace towards his wife, whose life he threatened.

The Committee is of opinion that water ri-rhts granted to minors m proclaimed Golcfiolds lipoii payment, without actual reservation of any

The Committee recommend the Government to take the whole subject into consideration, und !o initiate such legislation as may appear necessary to render of practical and certain value rights hitherto granted and hereafter to be grunted to nil classes.

The Government, intimate that no time will be lost in making surveys and giving effect to the will of the House in regard to the Otago Main Central Railway. The Native Lauds Sales Suspension Bill, the Constabulary Bill, and the Settlements Advance Bill have been dropped. (From imr Wellington correspondent.) Mr. Larnach will probably make the Financial Statement on Tuesday. Colonel Whitmore lias joined the Ministry, and will be sworn in to-dnv.

The three. Native Members who supported the late Opposition have requested Xawhia, the Maori representative in the Atkinson Government to accept office with Sir George Grey. Ife has accept ed. The Native Members desire to thus give au unanimous support to Sir "George and Mr. Sheehan. The Education Bill, Lands Bill, Mines Bill, and most of the other publio Bills will be slaughtered. It is likely that, in the interests of Wellington, Sir W. Fitzherbert will be requested to join the Government. If generally desired this is possible. His office would be Treasurer. In such case, Mr. O'Uorkd would probably be elected Speaker. Mackay, Government land purchaser, was committed to seven da3's' imprisonment for assault on Mr, Hislop, M.H. 8.. From the evidence it appeared that Mr. Hislop was quite able to take care of himself. A petition is being circulated in the town to the Governor for his release.

Mr. Lu'sk last night was fined £SO for drafting bills, and in the House, and for receiving payment from the Council at Auckland. The" decision of the House is not considered satisfactory, even by those who felt that Lusk had shown too great nearness in the transaction. Messrs- Atkinson, Ormoud, Stafford, and Moorhouse are leaving no stone unturned to organise an Opposition. Their efforts, so far, have proved futile, but no doubt matters will culminate in a bitter attack early in the week, which is sure to provoke a severe party battle. A large section of the House are determined that Sir George Grey shall not be ostracised for holding liberal views.
