MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting was held on the 6th iust., at the Council Chamber, Town Hull. Present—his Worship the Mayor, Crs. Hjorring, Dillon, Brookes, Horswell. and Glenn. . COBfiRxrONDENCK. The following let er and telegram were read by the Mayor : General Crown Lands Office, / August 23, 1877. 'Blft,-'-I havo the honor, by direction of tho Hon. the Secretary for Crown Lands, to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 6th inat., applying on behalf of the Borough Council of Nascby for an endowment of 2000 acres in terms of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1376, and, in reply, to .request you to select and indicate the land which is desired for the purpose. The selection must be made if possible in one block from land open for sale, but if it is preferred that the selection should be made from land adjoining the town the reserve would be subject to lease of pastoral tenants.—l have, &c., J. GILES. His Worship the Mayor, Naseby.

Wellington, Sept. 3rd. If important that endowment bo contiguous to town you may make selection of run, aud forward rough tracing of same along with application to this office. D. RBTD. . Let'er read from tho Town Clerk, Thames, enclosing resolution passed by that Council in reference to the proposed District Kailways Bill, and-asking the cooperation of the Naseby. Town Council in support of the same. Letter read from Messrs. Flannagan' and M'Grath, asking for six months further time to make good Ness-street. : — One month only granted, and left to the General Purposes Committee to exercise their discretion in the matter.

Letter read from the Secretary of the Naseby Cricket Club, enclosing vouchers paid for fencing the Recreation Reserve amounting to £34 10s., and requesting the Council to consider the extra amount of £4 10a. expended, and to make such refund as might seem fair.—After consideration, it was resolved that £3O only should be paid as originally agreed. Letter read from the Clerk of the Maniototo County Council, requesting that the sum of £ls received for the registration of dogs and remitted to Borough of Naseby fund account by mistake of the Colonial Treasurer be placed to credit of Maniototo County fund account.—Resolved, on the motion of Cr. Glenn 1 , "That the £ls paid in error to the Borough fund be remitted to the County Council." HOira OF MEETING. Resolved, on the motion of Cr. Hjobbino —"That the ordinary meetings of the Naseby Town Council be held at 8.30 p.m." BETUBN. The Town Clehk read and laid on the table the return asked for by Cr. Dillon, showing the amount of money expended in embanking or otherwise preventing the overflow of water or tailings on the stroets and footpaths occasioned by the working of mining claims. The return extended over five years,- :- > : and shewed that £76 4s. 6d. had been expended for that purpose. AUDITED ACCOUNTS. The Town Clebk read and laid on the table a detailed statement of the receipts and expenditure of the Corporation for the half-year ending 30th of June last, by which it appeared the receipts were £553 12s. Bd., and the expenditure £413 IGs. lid., leaving a credit balance of £139 15s. 9d. LAND _ ENDOWMENT. After a long discussion as to where the best selection of land could be made, for the interest of the town of Naseby, Cr. Glenn suggested and it was unanimously agreed that the whole Council form a Committee to inspoct tho land in the neighborhood of the town, and start the next morning to make selection of the 2000 acres offered by the Government as an endowment to the Corporation. BAILWAY BILL. The following resolution passed by the Borough Council of Thames, and referred to the Naseby Town Council for its cooperation and support, was approved and endorsod:—" That the proposed District Railways' Bill gives County Councils power to accept the construction of or to voto railways without any reference to or sanction from Borough Councils; that Boroughs will in all probability have to pay, by rate, the greater part of the interest required to be guaranteed; that tho position of depots, stations, &c., are of equal or greater importance to Boroughs than to Counties ; that under these circumstances Borough and County Councils should have equal powers, and should unitedly form tho Councils to whom applications should be made by railway companioa."

FINANCE. Accounts to the amount of £53 10s. 6d. were passed for payment. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7. LAND ENDOWMENT. A meeting of the Committee of the whole Council was held on Friday, 7th inst., at the Council Chamber, Town Hall, to consider and agree upon the best selection of 2000 acres of land as an endowment to tho Corporation of .fraseby. Present—his Worship the Mayor and n full Committee.

Moved by Cr. "Dillon, seconded by Cr. Hoeswell, and carried nem. con.— 4t That after inspecting to-day the land in tho neighborhood of Naseby, the Committee is opinion that for tho interest and benefit of the town the two thousand acres of land should be taken on the west side of the main Hogburn Gully, adjacent to the race-course, leaving sufficient room go as not to interfere with mining interests." The Town Clerk was instructed to obtain from tho District Surveyor a rough tracing of the land selected, and forward the sp.ino to the Crown Lands Department, Wellington.
