ST. BATHANS.
(From a correspondent.)
_ July Bth. The largest meeting that has been seen here for some years assembled in tk.3 schoolroom, to consider the proposed Oairaru-iN T aseby line of railway. Mr. de Lautourwas kindly present by invitation. Mr. G. Purlon occupied the chair, and, ni a few well-chosen remarks, introduced the subject for consideration, after which a number of resolutions in iavor of the line were proposed and carried with" ac clamation. Mr. de Lautour having been loudly called upon, came forward, and, in his clear and sensible style, explained the benefits of railway communication to the Interior generally, but he was of opinion that it was both fai? and politic for the people of this district to support the Oaniaru-Naseby line. This he fully explained to the satisfaction of the meeting ; which, after awarding a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. de Lautour for his presence, and another to the chair, soon after broke up. Evidently it is the inducement which would be offered to people for settling on the land that makes them so enthusiastic on this subject of railways.
