HAILWAT TO THE INTEEIOB. Mr. Roberts brought up the following report:— Tho Council having taken into consideration tho U P °' interior of tho Provincial District of Otago by railway, resolves, — ifc is , vor ?, str °ngly of opinion that tho River 8 railway is by way of the Taieri w ntl 't T? at requests the various mem- « ?i? -£, BSOn } b ly representing tho districts incluaoa in tho County of Taiori to use their bosfc endeavours to secure, during the coining meeting of Assembly, the making of said railway by tho Colonial Government. 3rd. That failing tho Colonial Government undertaking tho construction of the said railway, tho bnairmnn is hereby authorised to undertake tho necessary steps in accordanoo with section 122 of tho u, .l' 0 ? Act, 1876, to get Rncli powers as will enable this Council to construct tho said railway as far as tho County boundary, provided the General Government aro prepared to increase the Council's borrowing powers for this purpose and to grant to the County land which shall represent a valuo equal to tho cost of such railway. 4th. All such land so granted to this Council to bo undor the control of the Waste Lands Board, and

shall bo administered by it; but all revenue derived from the sale or leasing of such land shall belong to the County, and be applied to the payment of interest and sinking fund of any loan which may bo raised on account of the construction of such railway. sth. 1 hat the clerk be instructed to transmit to the Chairman of the Maniototo County Council a copv of tnc foregoing resolutions, with a request that they be placed before the next meeting of the Maniototo Council with a view of securing an expression of opinion upon them, and this Council expresses a hope that tho Maniototo Coimtv Council will heartily co-operate in securing the" object of these resolutions. Ho said that lie had consulted with Mr. Arthur and others, who were well up in this river, and was informed that the line as proposed was quite practicable. The line would open up the whole of the interior _ plain. Tire Maniototo County Council would meet on Wednesday, the 6th, and the resolutions then be placed before them. The resolution was carried unanimously. Mr. Shand moved and Mr. Burns seconded—" That the eugineer be in-, structed to make a flying survey of the proposed railway from Outram line to the interior, one by the way of the Taieri River and another by way of North Taieri as far as Strathtaieri, and to report at next meeting of C >uucil."
