THE EXJSSIA3TS KEPTJLSED AT KARS. Singapore, May 7. England has annexed the Transvaal Republic. The Russians have been twice repulsed at Ears, with heavy loss, and compelled to fall back. The British ironclad squadron at Corfu has been ordered to rendezvous at Crete. <3> TIDAL WAVE. (From our own correspondent.) Dunedin, Friday, May 11, 8 p.m. This morning a tidal wave was experienced all over the Colony. At Port Chalmers it rose three feet; Aksroa and Oamaru, eight feet; Wellington, four feet; Lyttelton, three feet; Napier, eight feet; and in the Clutha Eivar, fully four feet. At Oamaru the barque William Gifford struck the breakwater, was caught in a whirlpool, and, making a foot of water an hour, had to run to Port Chalmers for repairs. AtGisborae the water rose so rapidly that the men employed on the steamer G-o-a-head had to fly for their lives. The river overflowed its banks. MTJIIICIPAL CONFEBENCE. A conference of Municipal Councils, to consider the deductions from subsidy on account of charitable aid, is to be held.
