We hear that Mr. D. M'Kellar, of Tapanui, will leave this Colony in a week or two for New Mexico, where he intends to settle down. Ever since his return to this country frequent mention has been made of Sir James Fergusson as likely to contest vacant seats in Parliament for constituencies in different parts of the country. At length ho did come forward to contest Frome, in Somerset, whose member (Mr. Lopes, Q.C.) was recently raised to the Bench. The poll took place on the 25th November, when Sir James was defeated by 93 votes. His opponent was Mr. H. B. Samuelson, who for several years represented Cheltenham, but lost his seat at the General election in 1874. Sir James stood in the Conservative interest, which was represented by Mr. Lopes, and Mr. Samuelson was the Liberal candidate. The Liberals succeeded in turning their defeat at the last election by &5 votes into a victory, as already stated, by 93, so they are very jubilant. Meanwhile, Sir James is still out in the cold, though the election is to be disputed.
