KUMARA WATER SUPPLY.

COMMENCEMENT OF HEAD WORKS OF WAIMEA RACE. (' West Coast Times') _ On Monday last, fifty axemen and six pairs of sawyers were engaged at Kumara, by the District Engineer, to proceed to Kawhaka Creek, and on the following day most cf them were camped on the ground. About twenty were at once set to work to clear the scrub and undergrowth, to open a face of timber for falling, while the sawyers begau constructing pits. In a few days the works will be fairly under way, when additional liands will be gradually set on. The weather has been very wet during last week, but seems to have cleared up, and good headway will soon be made. The work is estimated to cost £30,000 to £40,000 and will require twelve months for construction, employing from 100 to 150. men, including masons, axemen, sawyers, &c. The plans were prepared by the public Works Department. Mr. Gow, who is at present in' charge of the Waimea Race will have charge of the works and be paymaster. Mr. Clapcott has been appointed timekeeper, aijd Mr. Kawlins ganger. The dam will consist of earthwork with stono facing of angular gianite, I7f chains in a straight line across the with a base weir of solid masonry, the dimensions of which will be fixed on completion of surveys. The work will be 200 ft wide in the bottom and- 12ft on the top, and reaching a height 30 ft above the surface.
