The case of E. T. George v. li. W. Bußch. is adjourned until Friday] the. 2nd instant, at 11 a.m. Work has been energetically commenced at the quartz claim lately taken up by a local company at the Rough Ridge, Mr. Withers' lease. "" Two "men during the week have been busy sinking on the reef, with, so far, very satisfactory result s. We understand that tenders for the continuation of the shaft to a depth of sixty feet are called for. The Council of the Otago Convention meet 1 to-morrow (Friday), at Dunedin, to consider what had-better-be-done—Sir G-eorge Greybeing unable to leave Ifew Zealaud as arranged. The Council will also have under . consideration the advisability or otherwise of testing, in the Supreme Court, the power of Parliament to deprive Otago of its local legislature. biNCE our last issue we. are in receipt of additional information plaeing it'beyond doubt that the Government intend to impound mining lease rents as Land-Fund.:: .For our part we arenot surprised. f" WE-glory in the big gooseberry, season, especially when/theifruJt'"shown-is. growii- on. . mountain tops. Eleven fine berries, weighing a good deal oyer half a-pound, and some nearly: an ounce a pisee, have been shown to us, grown by Mr. G-lenn in his hill garden at Naseby. The season has been £t very fine one for all-the small fruits, cherries, plums, and apricots. The apples only do not seem to be very plentiful. Some very fine fruit of this season's growth - liasj' "bTowef er, been shown" during the week by Mr. Busch, at Naseby, brought from the Teviofc; A fine sample of ' wheat has also been scut in to us, grown by Mr. M'Cready at- the Eyeburn Diggings. A small field at Sowbura is also promising well although only spring sown. There appears (Q be -no doubt, in spite of semi-offieiarielcgrumß aHowecl to'see" the of publication, that material alterations are to be made in the standing'of th'e'^ta'go'""police. J??r these and other reasons of false econoßiyit.is.inwndev.l to place them : all on the samefooting as' the Armed Constabulary. The reason given that such fusion is necessary in order to enable l the' Northern force to be redneed is meaningless, unless it is intended to fill up gapß caused in the North from the South. Then, if a man is transferred North, he must 'get suck reduced pay us is going in the North, and no more. In this way an absurd uniformity of pay will be hit -upon, regardless of special circiimstances. On Tu(;b:t«y tb« body of Owen Lrivori.y, of Hyde, drowned at Mar'dl'ing's terry about the 550Ui of November lust, was recovered. The body wis discovered about right miles below Hyde. An inquest wa? lieid on Thursday before thf»'l>i!iLric r Coroner, If. W. Robinson, 3£sq. It were to be wi-hed the law could be modified, s>r> I hut surli poinful mid protr»ctect circumstances could in future bo avoided. In this ciiC'O we lind immodiate burial imperative ; vet, far nearly two days, we find it has to be rafusml, and a jury brought together to arrive ut a foregone conclusion. The finding of the I'f.idy w:is reported in Palmerston early on Wednesday..-- We fail to understand why, Mr. Mam, or some other justice, could not have hpJd the inquest, in the unavoidable absonce of the Coroner. No wonder people cry out against our system. The crioket match between Naseby and Palmerston is to be played at Palmerston on Saturday, 3rd insfc. The Naseby team is probably Messrs. Ash, Blair, Baxter, Curric, d 9 Lautour, Grose, Mac Nab, H'Huteheson, M'JNicol, Sandow, and Wade. The Palmer- ' ston men am reported by the local paper to be Mews. Cobden, Cathcart, Bellett, Moore, Wilson, Kett, Pagan, Small, Nelmes, Everest (J.), Everest (W.) The Nnseby team are weak in batting and fielding, but make up for those deficiencies by having some very good bowling. We expect Mac Nab, M'Hutcheson, M'Nicol, and Snndow to give a good account of the Palmersi on wickets. Shaw's Auckland average of 3 runs per wicket will satisfy us. The match promises, from the interest taken, to be a good one. Mr. 11. G-. Smith has kindly consented to accompany the Naseby team as umpire. Otm Maerewhenua correspondent has given us a few particulars of a very handsome and spacious country house, erected by the Hon. It. Campbell at his Olekiike estate near the "Wnitaki. The building is of white stone, obtained on the ground. In another direction local industry has been encouraged, for the slates for the roof come from the Otcpopo quart ies. The building contains forty rooms, all supplied with water from the Otekuike river. In case of fire the reservoir is built at an elevation sufficient to supply power to throw Water over the very top of the building. No expense has been spared, and when finished the residence will bo one of the finest in the Colony. It, is situated in a valuable freehold of abort 20,000 acres, 10,000 of which formed the once famous Maerewhenua block. A MEKTisa of the Athenmum Committee was held on Monday evening last—present: Messrs. M'Latchy (chair), Collorick, M'Hutpheson, Ash, and J)r. Whitton. The principal business was lo endeavor to procure as many as possible of the shipment of books just landed by the Education Board, which will probably be 1 he last received by that body on the- present, terms. It was resolved to send £6 to the Secretary, which amount will procure übout forty volumes.—lt was Btaled that, in accordance with a resolution passed at last meeting, the Seereta j had written, stopping 'Harper's. We.kly' and the 'Graphic,' aud that, in lieu thereof, he had ordered from the publishers the ' Pall Mall Budget,' ' Mucmillan's Magazine,' and 'Scanner's Monthly.' These standard publications will prove a great attraction to the reading loom.
