VOLUNTEER MOVEMENT.
On Monday evening, November 27th, a public meeting was held in tbe Town Hall, rfaseby, for the purpose of establishing a Volunteer Company. Over eighty persons attended. <Jn the motion of Mr. M'Hu'johteson, Mr. Busch (tbe Mayor) took the Chair. The Chairman, in opening the proceedings, stated that, although it was not his intention to become a Volunteer, the movement met with bis hearty approval, and had his best wishes for success. He wauld be glad to do all in his power to promote lis interests. He then called upon Dr. "Whitton to rend the first resolution, who, after a few preliminary remarks) moved over eighty persons having signified (heir willingness to become members of a Volunteer Corps, it is advisable that such a Corps be established in Naseby." Mr. John Allen, as an old Volunteer, had great pleasure in seconding fcho motion. Carried. Mr. Foot moved, and Mr. S. Andebson seconded —" That the name of the Company be the ' Mount Ida Rifles.'"

Committee be appointed for the purpose of collecting all necessary information, and that they be empowered to take the necessary iuitiatory steps for formation of Company." Carried. Mr. G. Stephens moved, and Mr. Babeon seconded—" That the Committee consist of seven." On the suggestion of Mr. Mae-hs, the words " With power to add to their number " were added, and the resolution was carried. The following gentlemen were then appointed as a Provisional Committee-=-Messrs. M'Hutcheson, Whitton, Foot, Barron, Allen, Stephens, and Grumitt. Mr. Bauson moved, and Mr. Stephens seconded —" That, until an answer favorable or otherwise be received from'the' Defence Minister,, preliminary drill-.-bev cawied oh. twice a ; week~ to be conducted under the direction" of some person- or ppTsdffs selected for the itime being' for' i that purpose by the Committee." J Mr. Matjtin moved, as', an amendment ] .-Vf-J* That drill he held only once, a week." ! Mr. Webbek, to test the feeling of the ; meeting,'seconded the amendment. After some discussion, the original mo- j tion was carried, as read. Mr. M'Hutcheson moved—" That the j first drill be held in the Town Hall on j Friday evening next, at 7.30 p.m., provi-. j ded that the Hall can be obtained for that purpose. This was seconded by Mr. Ash, and carried. A vote of thanks to the Chairman, and three vociferous cheers for the " Mount Ida Rifles," concluded the business of the evening. ■ A Committee meeting was held after- ! wards, when the names of Messrs. H. Wilson and G. F. Newmarch were added to the Committee— five to be a quorum.
