(From our own correspondent.)

Dunedin, Thursday Evening. A political meeting will bd held at Carersham to-night, similar to that held in the Drill Shed on Monday, when resolutions will be proposed stating that the actions of the Ministry are actuated by a desire to pawn the waste lands of the Province. Thanks the district representaiives for their action, axid advising all Otago members in the event of failing to preserve that independenr-e enjoyed under Provincial institutions to return to the Province in a body, to" which end the meeting pledges itself to -support them, at all hazards. On Haughton being placed in the dock on Tuesday, the police obtained leave to withdraw the original information, owing to ambiguity, and substituted another, charging him with attempting to commit an unnatural offence on William Wilson at Wellington on Angust 23rd. He was remanded to Wellington, and will appear there within eight days. Bail—fixed at himself in £4OO, and two sureties of £2oo—was immediately forthcoming. Roberts, the billiard champion, left Melbourne for New Zealand yesterday, jj * RESIGNATION op the GOVERNMENT RETIREMENT OF V9GEL. , Wellington, Wednesday.' The Government resigned yesterday. ; Vogel announced his retirement from public life. He is willing to take tbe Agent - Generalship for twelve or eighteen months. He finds that public life is incompatible with

the attention which his duty to his health nnd family demands. Minor Atkinson is sent for. The House adjourned to Thursday evening RECONSTRUCTION of the MINISTRY Wellington, Thursday, It is supposed that the new Government are to meet the House to-night, and that they will be—Atkinson, Premier and Treasurer; Richardson, Bowen, and M'Lean (G. ?) old offices; Ormond, .Native Office; Whitaker, Resident Minister at Auckland; John Hall to succeed Pollen in the Upper House. The adjournment of the House till Tuesday is probable. MACANDREW'S PROPOSALS. In the Assembly, on Tuesday, Macandrew gave notice of his intention to move that the provisions of the Abolition Act of last session were repugnant to the feelings and opposed to the interests of the people of Otago, and that therefore the operation of the Act be suspended so far as the Province of Otago is concerned ; and that the Governor be asked to order a fresh election for Superintendent and Provincial Council of Otago, so as to afford the people of that Province an opportunity of determining what form of local government would suit their requirements, and that the Abolition Act be held in abeyance as regards Otago Province. It is said in Wellington that unless Macandrew succeeds, in carrying his motion all who voted for him will withdraw from the Assembly. «■ . PARLIAMENTARY. : A Ministerial statement was made on Tuesday night. The Premier said that, while at Home, certain inducements of a pecuniary nature had been held out to him to remain at Home. Though his health was such as to make a lengthy stay in England advisable, yet, feeling his return to New Zealand was looked for, he came back as soon as his health permitted. On his return ■he informed his colleagues that he feared the state _'of his health would preclude him from remaining long in the Colony, and his experience this session had not changed his opinion, and would probably prevent his taking part in public life any more. He hoped that, under the circumstances, he would not be accused of deserting his post. It was only within the last eight or ten days that the appointment of Agent-General had been discussed in the Cabinet, and his colleagues being aware that he was not going to remain long in the Colony, had suggested his acceptance of the place. Being unable to appoint himself Agent-General, he had placed his resignation in the hands of the Governor advising him to send for Atkinson. Major Atkinson asked for an adjournment till Thursday to consult his friends. _ Rolloston said that the Premier had done his colleagues a wrong. It was new to Mm that the Premier owed his existence to Ms colleagues. There weie many men who had sacrificed their health and their all in the service of the country. It could not be pleaded in justification that the Premier resigned office owing to ill health. The precedent was dangerous, and he hoped an opportunity would be afforded for the discussion of the question. After Mr. . ; ndrew had expressed himself to a similar effect, the House adjourned. Latest telegrams say that efforts have been made, but unsuccessfully, to induce Hall and Reid to join the Ministry, and that the Ministry will be reconstructed as before, with Vpgel left out. The 'North Otago Times,' which has been so strong a supporter of Vogel, to-day des* cnbeshim as a political traitor. It Bays—lt was painful, paltry, and pitiable in the extreme the exhibition made of himself by the Premier of Colony on Tuesday evening. On a flimsy, paltry, pretext he has thrown duty to the winds; has preferred his own to his country's good.
