ARREST OF MR. C. E. HAUGHTON.
Spme astonishment and much pain was created on Monday • afternoon by the rumor that a well-known Government official— Charles Edward Haughton—had been arrested for a serious criminal offence. Inquiry proved the rumor to be correct. Mr. Haughton, who, UDtil lately, has held the office of Under-Secretnry to the Immigration Department, was arrested by Inspector Mallard on the railway platform at 2.30 on Monday afternoon, just as he was about to enter the Port Chalmers train with the intention of proceeding in the mail steamer to Europe. The accused is charged-under a warrant issued at Wellington with attempting to commit an unnatural offence. Shortly afier his arrest he was brought before Mr. Mercer and remanded to gaol—bail, however, being allowed, himself in £2OO, and two sureties of £IOO each. As in all such cases, various rumors are afloat more or less prejudicial to the accused, but they are not, so far as is known, based upon fact?. The accused wili be brought up at the Police Court this morning to answer to the charge.—' Guardian.'
