MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Council waß held on Thursday last. Present—his Worship the Mayor, and full Council. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. COEBESPONDENCE. Letter read and received, in reply to Town Clerk's, from Mr. Walter Inder, agent for the Albion Brewing Company, stating that the Company declined the offer made by the Council to rent the inner cellar of ihe Town Hall. LAND ENDOWMENT. The Mayor called the attention of the Council to the importance of an application being made immediately to the Government to grant certain lauds in the neighborhood oils'aseby for the benefit of the Corporation.—After discussion it was agreed to refer the consideration of the matter to the General Purposes Committee, to select land required, and report to the next meeting. FINANCEThe Mayor read the report of the Finance Committee, at the same time stating that he objected to two accounts—one from Cr. George, £2 12s. 6d.; the other from Mr. Walter Inder, £2 25., for attending the R.M. Court on the 24th instant, to appeal against assessment for the year 1876-7 (on which occasion the Eesi-
deirt Magistrate considered that he had no jurisdiction, and tbat the appeals should be heard before the District Judge)—as ho (the Mayor) considered they had no claim whatever on the Council, t After discussion it was moved by Cr. G-EOBG'E, seconded by Cr. Rowlatt—- " That the accounts, as recommended by the Finance Committee, be passed for payment." Amendment, by Cr. Cbaig, lapsed for want of a seconder —" Thas the accounts of Messrs. Inder and George be not passed for payment, and that the rest of the accounts, amounting to £l4 125., be passed for payment." ~ Amendment by Cr. Brookes, seconded by Cr. Newmabch, and lost by the casting vote of the Chairman—" That the Finance Committee's report be not passed for payment until amended." The Mayob remarked that the Finance Committee, as constituted, would simply adhere to their previous renommendation, and that the payment of the undisputed accounts on the finance sheet would be considerably delayed. Ayes : Crs. Dillon, Brookes, and Newmarch ; noes: Cr. Craig, Rowlatt, and George. Cr. George's motion was then put, when there voted—ayes: Crs. George, Eowlatt, Brookes, Dillon, and Newmarch; noes: Cr. Craig. The following accounts were passed for payment;— Thomas -King, 10s.; ' Mount Ida Chronicle,' £9 16s. 6d.; Inspector of Nuisances, three months' salary, £2 10s.; H. Woodhill, Deputy Returning Officer, South "Ward election, £1 Is.; Cr. George, attending Appeal Court, 241 h instant, £2 12s. 6d.; Mr. Walter Inder, attending Appeal Court, 24th inst., £2 2s.
