ELECTION.

Monday, the 17th, was the day fixed for the poll in the Mount Ids district. The day proved very fine—a fact which materially contributed towards the large number of votes recorded. Although a great number on the roll are not now in the district, the number of votes recorded proved greater than on the three previous occasions. At the last election for the General Assembly, when Mr. Mervyn beat Mr. Macassey, 367 votes were recorded, and the winning majority was also a large one—l3B. On the present occasion squibß were plentiful, a few being pronounced to be almost artistic. At abont 4.30 the St. Bathans returns were announced from the Naseby post office platform. In about three minutes after the Returning Officer announced the Naseby result. The large majority, which was almost unexpected, checked all excitement.

Mr. db Lautoub, being called for, thanked the electors briefly for their very cordial support. Mr. E. A. Chapman attributed his defeat to being a squatter, and to being late in the field. He thanked those gentle-, men who had voted for him for their support. Mr. Hbbisui conld accept a beating. He had still his doubts, but would not express them. He hoped the district would be served as honestly as he would have served them. The results from the various polling booths are as follows :
