DISTRICT PUBLIC WORKS.

Mr Abbot's Head Race contract is Just about completed. Yet we hear of no likelihood of any further progress being made with the carrying-out of the main work. The Sludge Channel contract is now nearly completed. There is not much left to be done except a general clearing up and a few' repairs. Some byewashes have also to be cut.

The bridge over German Creek, Kyebum, let to Mr G. Carrie, ii, we believe, to be commenced on the Ist February. The bridge over Muddy Creek has been satisfactorily passed. The Taieri Bridge is now open for traffic. The approaches have been completed, and the road leading to the approaches on both sides is to be made good. The Gorge road to also to be improved by cnlverts and cuttings. The road from the bridge to Naseby is to be shortened. It will follow up the Main Gully, on the right of the Hoghurn Creek, crossing over a mile or two below Amies' Hotel, and joining the road at present in use a little below the main road fence.

The new road in the Swineburn Gorge is being formed, gravelled, pitched, and drained in the worst places. Mr it. H. Browne, the District Engineer, has had' from eight to tw men and drays placed on the road for some time. The road now appears very greatly improved. The famous Bay of Biscay will shortly be abandoned, and before the hud weather sets in the new deviation—which is now being formed and pitched; will be open. The new road found (Joai Ureek Hill J which had to be closed last winter, is also being looked after, and is now being pitched, where necessary, and repaired. A few thour sand pounds judiciously spent between Waihemo and Swinebnrn would make travelling between Dunedin and Clyde safe and enjoyable, and at the same time relieve the immense traffic to the interior now concentrated on the South Road.
