JOVE THE THUNDERER

Visitors to the Crystal Palace a few evenings ago were horrified at beholding a human being suspended in the air by a wire, with squibs and crackers exploding round him in all directions It .was evident that the- spectacle was not intended as an " amusement," Icnr were being madeto rescue the """stiffexer from hisi frightful position. thus suspended in the air was in tftftni' " Jove the. Thunderer," who it was announced would descend on an incline wire from the top of the northern tower to the lake on the terrace amidst a shower of fireworks, and would; moreover, in his descent assume the position of a " flying angel.,, Unfortunately something went wrong with the machinery by means of which the descent was to have been effected, the. result being that Jove the Thunderer, after descending a certain distance, stuck fast on the itu clined wire. With much difficulty a rope was at last worked up to the scene of Jove's misfortunes, and a workman pulling himself up hand over hand, rescued the Thunderer, who then slid down in safety, to the great relief of the spectators. All's well that ends well. No fatal accident occurred, but it is hoped that before Jove the Thunderer again aa-' Bumea' the of a flying angel: some steps will be taken to prevent the possibility of his .becoming one of these aerial beings prematurely.
