SERPENTINE.
(From a correspondent.)
October 29. It is a long time since I wrote you any lines about this part of the district. I take up my pen now to inform you of a grievance of great importance. Our road is quite closed at the Linburn Station, between here and Naseby. I should not have believed things were so bad, but I was coming along from the Sowburn, and chanced to be driving a couple of horses before me, when I came to Turnbull's Station, I looked about to see where I could get through. I tried two or three places but they were all locked up. At last I tried to get through by the station. Two men came to the gate and said " you shan't come through here " I asked, where will I get through? one of them replied "up there," pointing with his hand, so I had to look for this "up there." I found the gate after a good deal of looking. In consequence of the delay I had to stop at the Blackball all night, when I could have been home easily, if I could have followed the road. I have been going along this road for the last twelve years now. If the runholder can now close it, after being in use for so long a time, I suppose we will have to go round by the Upper Taieri. The Government are talking about the Country being thrown open but I think they are going to close it if they allow things to go on like this. The sooner the cleat out and go to Victoria or New South Wales, were they have good roads and free selection, the better. In regard to mining I never have seen things look better. According to prospects we are going to do well this year: Ilumford and party ; and Long and party, seem to be going to get gold tnis year, it seems to me that outside parties thought the Serpentine was done .in regard to mining. I can assure them that sluicing will be carried on for the next ten or fifteen years to come. I believe we have as good quartz reefs as are to be found in the country if they were opened up. There are some good specimens to be seen in one or two places. The Chinese are coming back to their old huts for the summer.
