(From our own correspondent.) [The following appeared in our issue of Saturday last:—] Dunedin, Friday, 8 p.m. The Abolition Bill passed through Committee last right. The House, by 34 to 16; carlied the . clause prohibiting the reassembling of Provincial Counci'a. llie third .reading is fixed for Tuesday. Captain Stevens, of the ship Auckland, attempted to' commit suicide at Glasgow by jumping out of a railway carriage while travel-., ling forty miles an hour. When picked up his throat-was found to.be very badly cut. He married Miss Sproule, schoolmistress here, when in Dunedin last Christmas. Latest reports state that, his recovery was doubtful. The new Dunedin Fire .Brigade consists of thirty members. The Municipal "Coiaiicil's vote for the maintenance of the brigade is £SOO a-year.
Tub 'Poverty Bay Herald' of tho 7th inst. 6tates that the Rev. E Willams, the newly-appointed pastor of this arrived in Gisborae with his family on Sunday .morning last, and conducted service in Trinity Church in the evening before a numerous congregation. The reverend gentleman preached an excellent introductory sermon, pointing out, in plain, concise, language the reciprocal duties and responsibilities which should exist between himself and his parishioners. He concluded with an earnest exhortation that the members of . the Church would not fail in their duty towards themselves and their pastor, and. with the solemn assurance that he would do his utmost to fulfil the sacred : responsibility which he had undertaken.
