IS HE CONSISTENT?
/jPb iA# Editor of the Mount Ida Cheoniclx.) : - S:b,—Mr. Mervyn is reported to hare stated in the House " that it was distinctly ou the question of abolition he was elected." Might I ask, sir, if Mr. Meryynli assertion is in accordance with fact ? As »r as this immediate portion of the dist?ict is concerned it certainly was not question of abolition that any Totel were recorded for him. On the contrary the jeneral feeling here is just the-other wayt and I believe it was the outspoken -. and r.nmistakeable way in which "Honest JohE";spoke on-this matter that got for him ; he all but unanimous vote of this portim of the district at the last election. Thabany Ministry should endeavor to hum through an expiring Parliament an : impdtant measure such as this should in . itself be sufficient, to cause the Bill to be - 0 . lookel upon wit.lv siispicion, ; even though " the hnguage in' which it was couched waa iritellgible to the dullest intellect. How much more so when, I yehture to say, ' nineteen out. of every twenty who have read tie Bill really understand very little aboutyi. It does appear strange, the apathfof the people of this Province, whilea measure of such moment is being debated in the Assembly. But, should Ministers succeed in carrying their point, the p«ople of Otago will wake up in a year <r two hence to find out that they have hrown away a power and privileges that vjll noo easily be regained.—l am, 4JO-.
