Sib, —Having heard so many conflicting reports about the Naseby Sludge Channel, I thought it prudent to pay a visit to it, and ascertainirom .personal observation to what" extent the Sludge Channel was completed. /I-was gratified trf find the channe.l m a much more forward state, than is -generally believed outside of Naseby tand by many in Naseby). I find the channel cut to within about two miles of JSaseby, which is as faras^the-present contract extends./' The side and'bottoiri stones are on the ground to complete ( the race as'far as cut. It_ will take about' fourinonths to put in the 'stones, and take out the remaining portion of- the bottom. I could not J? el .P observing the great-amount of stun piled up on the banks of the ; race which is sure to crush m the sides'as the wet weather setsin/ The contractors will they stand up till it is regretted that water waa hot available to construct the race with, instead of piling the stuff on the top, which,; is certain to give.much trouble, and very likely have to /be removed further back, orwasheddown ithe.channel.- -v : :,.•:•. ; : -Lcould:nothelp thinking, -afterlooking r at theiundreds of acres of kndwnpayable ground that the Channel would open up, that Mount Ida had a bright future before her. It only requires the Channel to be completed to cause a bustle and excitement httle contemplated at present. There is'not: the slightest doubt but that the Government wUI vote a further sum to complete theremaming two miles, but pressure'would probably require tribe brought it b £ ar -. • Ifcw a lasting diserace to the Government if.they left the.,work uncompleted. If that is their intention, the sooner they. t; make ife known the: better, *l--^:2 W P nTate enterprise what the great public works scheme has failed. tQ accomplish. I think the Provincial Government would act wisely-if they vqted ,a.isufficient sum to complete the ChannelT-which can be dohe-'at'a verymoderate cost, if they allow the contractors to cut the race with Va'ter, and not one half the-time-would be required. What the Government" ought tb f do'is to hurry on the present .'contract,; so as the Channel would be available to' "complete the remaining portion with as little delay as possible. I se e np reaspn, why some of the large companies on j Mount" Ida could ?°$ the completion of the Channel it the Government would = give them a and'(say) ' ,! so much ground for a mining claim, whicTi. would ensure the; completion of the works with expeditori.—l aih, &c, -^^nr. r ; ' ,J ..,' J : - s ".-;;;^ .- ■'" f^°<^fjSS.
