Three or four bags New Zealand letters, including registered letters, were saved." \ i A meeting- of the members of the Naseby Athenaeum took place in the reading room of the institution. Mr. Busch was called to the chair. Afler some desultory conversation the members of the Committee for the .past year resigned their offices, when the following gentelemen were elected for the present:—Messrs Lory, Ash, Hertslet, M'Latchy, Menzies,. Busch, Bromley, and Robinson. The first meeting of the new Committee will take place at the Athenaem on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The ' Wellington Tribune *: says : —Amid the various re-arrangements and appointments of the Supreme Court which has taken place, a name at one time somewhat prominent, has . dropped entirely out of view; and we refer to that of Judge Ward. Even his invective against an unfortunate- bankrupt, which recently went the round of the press, failed to suggest his name for judicial promotion, although years ago he was well qualified for a seat on the Supreme Bench. It is now twenty years since Mr. Ward was elected as a member of the Greneral Assembly for the Porirua district : he was even then an antiprovincialist and proved himself an ample debater. He had every reason to anticipate a high ' career, but it has undergone an eclipse. The WardCbapman Committee of last session threw a shade over several reputations, but none of them suffered so much as that of Dudley Ward, who remains a District Judge when less able lawyers go to the Supreme Court.
