LIFE AT THE PALMER.
Mr. Eccies has placed at our disposal a second letter received from Mr. Robert Brown:— Melbourne, February 3rd. I have just arrived in Melbourne from the Palmer River. My health is not good at present, as I had fever twice—first fever, then ague, and afterwards slow fever, which is the worst kind of fever here. The doctor advised me to get a change, as he could do very little for me. Jack (Latham) would have come with me but he thought he might as well stop uutil his rations were done, having enough for about two months I met Johnny Gordon the day before I came away. He and little Billy bought two horses, and were going to start for the new rush, which is not much account. Solomon Brown, Billy M'Cready and Pat Miller came wi:h me to Sydney. The country at the Palmer is very sickly. People aw dying from fever and ague in great numbers, My advice would be for noone to go there, but every one can please himself. I was sorry to hear of the death of Dr. Dick, as I do not think you will get one so good.
