PUBLIC MEETING.
A meeting was held at the Oddfellows' Hall on Monday evening last. In spiter of the short notice and the severe wea-f ther, there were about sixty present. Mr. de LATJTOtJE explained that he had asked those interested to meet him to dis-' cuss whether it was advisable that any steps should be taken with regard to the* leading requirements of the district, which appeare 4 . to him to be the deepening of the Sludge Channel (which seemed to be hanging fire), the question of the railway serve, and also of land for settlement in the district. The Mayor being absent, and time being precious, he had takeff upon himself to call tHem together. Mr. de Lautour was then voted to thff chair.
Mr. Beemneb proposed -"That, inthe 1 - opinion of this meeting, it is desirable and necessary that the utmost pressure be brought to bear on the Assembly to have the requirements of the district attended to: First of these, the deepening of the Sludge Channel; second, the obtaining of an agricultural area; and the construction? of a railway through the and that this meeting appoint a Committee to carry out these views." Mr. Beookes seconded* the motion, which was carried unanimously. ~". : Mr. Glenn proposed that the Committee consist of seven—five to form a quorum, with power to add to their number* Mr. Hjoeeing seconded the motion, which was carried. . . ■ .
The following gentlemen were then nominated to act as a Committee:—» Messrs. Busch, de Lautour, Bremner/ Craig, Jackson, _ Bromley, Glenn,. Mulholland, Woodhill, Brookes, Collet;,, Shannon, and Packman. • After: some discussion/ the. Committee elected were declared to be —Messrs. Jackson, Shannon, Collett, de Lautour, Mulholland/ and Packman—the Committee adding the Mayor's name as honorary member, and electing, subject to their consent, Messrs* Bremner, Glenn, and Brookes. A collection was then made in the room •f shillings and half-crowns towards expenses, which was liberally responded to. Mr. John Beemnee then proposed/ and Mr. Bbookes seconded the following resolution, which was carried n ith accla-' mation —" That, in the opinion of this meeting, if the proposed 2,000,000 acre reserve is set apart as security for public works, without it being first provided that a railway be made right through it, a serious loss to the revenues, and a great injustice to this district will be perpetrated." Mr. W. L. Bailey supported the resolution, which was put and carried. 'A : vote of thanks to the chair terminated the business. ■..-., ■:,, v >.
The first meeting of the Gonitnittee was held on Tuesday last. Present—-Messrs. Collett, Jackson, Packman, Mulholland, and Craig. Mr. Collett was voted t6 the chair. .
SLtfJDGE CHANNEL.. . u - Proposed by Mr. JacksoNj seconded by" Mr. Packman, that the Secretary telegraph to Mr. Mervyn "to-morrow- (Wednesday) to ask in the House concerning the deepening of the Sludge Channel. AGBICOXTUBAL SETTLEMENT.. Proposed by Mr. Mulholland, and seconded by Mr. Packman, that Mr. Keid be advised by telegram that ?a memori 1 has been forwarded to him praying that a 5000 acre biock on Eweburn run be opened for agricultural settlement. r
It was agreed that it should bs left op- .. tional with the Secretary as to communicating with the Goldiields Secretary concerning the 5000 acre block for settlement. . BAltWir.- » It_ was'agreed that the Secretary communicat'e either by letter or telegram with the Mayors of Palmerston and Clyde, also with St. Bathans, Blacks, Tinker's Gully, Drybread, Kyeburn, Hamilton, and Hyde, urging that action should be taken in each of those places to induce the Government to make provision for the construction of a railway from Palmerston to Clyde. Proposed by Mr. Cbaig—" That a Committee consisting of Messrs. do Lautour, Jackson, and the mover, be appointed to draw up a memorial to the Premier, urging the necessity of proper provision being made for the construction of a railway from Waihemo to Clyde through ' the block of land proposed to be.set apart as security for the construction of certain public works in Otago. ''
