MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting, of the Council was held at the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening last.' Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Craig,' Brookes, and Hjorring.

CORKESPONDENCE.—INWAJID : Letter from Mr. Andrew Marshall, stating that, in conspquence of Cr. Craig's notice of motion to remove the lamp and post at the end of the cemetery road, ho would respectfully advance the following reasons against the same : That the road in the vicinity of the lamp is the most dangerous within the Municipality—the ground having, been sluiced away on oither side, having perpendicular faces from six to twelve feet deep; that it is a main road with considcrabte Raffle ; that bad weather, with dark nights, may now be exand to remove the light at this time of tho year would occasion inconvenience to the public, and likely result in some serious accident.

■ Letter from Town Clerk, Cromwell, informing this Council that it is intended by the Cromwell Council to memorialise the Superintendent to endeavor to get such arrangements maclein calling for mail contracts next year as will cause Cromwell to receive the mails on the evening of "the second day from Dunedin, and asking the Naseby Council to give the movement its assistance.

A month elapsed before the Council decided. In the meantime cartage had risen to £8 ss. and £lO a ton, making a difference in his estimate of £4O. Under the circumstances, therefore, he asked the . Council to take the matter into their favorable consideration, as he could not afford to lose that amount of money.—The matter was postponed for the consideration of a full Council. SANITARY CONDITION OF THE TOWN. The following report from the Inspector of Nuisances was read and received:— I lmvo the honor to state that I have this day made a thorough inspection of all the back premises in Leven, Toy,'and Envn-strents, and beg to report that some of the closets are not kept as clean as they should be. I have in consequence given notice to several pnrsonsf to havo their premies properly cleaned, and, if this is not dune within the time of notice, I shall take proceedings uptainst them. There are two cases in which I intend to take action immediately. The Mayob stated that Dr. Dick had called his attention to the \msatis factory sanitary condition of the town, and he had in consequence insSsgcted the Inspector, of Nuisances to make*'a thorough inspection of all the back premises. Cr. Craig said that he had himself that day inspected some of the back premises in Broom-street, which were kept in a most filthy siate, although there -was greater facility there for drainage than in Tay-street* He looked upon this matter as one of the greatest importance. He also objected to pigs being kept in populated places. After considerable discussion it was agreed to refer the whole matter to the Sanitary Committee, to report as early as possible. MINING CLAIM. Resolved—" That Flannagan's application for permission to work Ness-street have first consideration after Webber and Moore have done with the road they now occupy, and that M'Grath's application to cross the footpath with tail race be granted, subject to the approval of the General Purposes Committee." LAMPS. Cr. Ceaig asked permission to withdraw his notice of motion in consequence of the statement read from Mr. Marshall. Resolved, on the motion of Cr. Bbookes, seconded by Cr. Hjoebing—" That the lamp at the Cemetery road be shifted to near Harper and Co.'s claim; also, that, two more lamps be erected, one opposite the Fire Brigade shed, the other at the bridge crossing the Dead Level on the main road. . « MAIL SERVICE. "Resolved—" That a Committee, consisting of his Worship the Mayor, Crs.. Brookes and Craig draw up a memorialin support of the one to be forwarded from the Cromwell Council, praying that ar rangements may be made next year by which Cromwell can be reached on the evening of the second day from Dunedin."' ASSESSORS. Resolveo—"That Messrs Gason and M'Donald be the assessors for the ensuing year, at the same salary as last year." . . finance. The following accounts were passed for payment: Jas. Steedman, iron work ! about Town Hall, £2 175.; Wm. Jacob, progress payment, £B2 10s.; Peter Talbot, on account of contract in Tay-street, £2O; Morrison and Langmaak, for removal of bodies from old graveyard to cemetery, £l7 10s.
