HAMILTON.
(From a correspondent.) '"., April 20th. It is so seldom anything occurs here to break the monotony of bur dull place, that the supper and ball which came off' in the Court House on Friday evening last ought not to pass unnotiaed., It was given in honor <of Mr. Cunningham and Mr. Thomas Bailey, who are both leaving this week for Europe, and, as far as good cheer went, was a success. The company was very limited, there being but five Ham ilton men, besids Mr. Bailey's relations. There were a few friends and their wives from the Sowburn. What was wanting in numbers was made up in noise. After supper some few speeches were made, and the Vice-Chairman called for three cheers for old Bailey, which was responded to. Then three cheers for old Cunningham, which was also given— Mr. Cunningham leaving shortly after. rThe room was then cleared for dancing and singing. The Vice-Chahmaa sang *the first song, which was duly applauded. Next Mr. T. Bailey sang. Song followed song, until about 11 o'clock, when dancing commenced, and was kept up (with occasional songs) until six .o'clock on Saturday morning. In your issue of thelOtli inst. is a letter signed James Nicholls, which was quite unnecessary, and uncalled for. Every one knows what an admirable institution the hospital is, and all on Hamilton are constant subscribers, I believe, as well as himself.
Another very heavy load of moa bones left here on Tuesday last forDunedin. I hear there is nearly another load yet to go Mining news is scarce,'and water for mining purposes is more so. j Some few men are leaving in consequence, though we have not dwindled down to fifty yet, as your correspondent stated some weeks since, our number being about ninety.
