(To the Editor of the Mount Ida Ciibonicle.)

Sik,—Allow me a small space in your paper to express the extreme surprise and indignation felt by tho St. Bathans townspeople at the -delay on the part of the Superintendent and Mr. Bastings in fulfilling their promise to sell the township of Si. Bathans. It is now twelve mouths or more since the promise was made. After a long timo the Board of Inquiry collected evidence, and, it was understood, recommended the sale, but nothing has been beard of it yet. We have a Water Co. ready to gct.their plant, but who do not like to go to expense till tho township in sold. This delay in the water supply doubles tho injustice of the Government autiou, as we are without clear water, and totally without any supply in case of' fire. The only dribble of water available passes through the filth at-different times, thrown into the gully from the butcher's shops and other houses, so can hardly be healthy for adults, and is entirely destructive to young children. As to 'fire we have had two alarms of late—on Tuesday last, the 24th of February, and on the first of March on Mr. WW'ler's premises. lam sorry to say that, should a tire take place on these premises, the whole township would bo destroyed, as Mr. Wheeler is in the habit of keeping a quantity of blasting powder in.the shop. —I am, &c, Constant Scbsceibeb.

the Editor of the Mount IdaOheosticle.) Stß,-rlii p'jrusin*'your last issue I was • not at all surprised to.sce a counter petition the.declaration of a Hundred in the irqmediate .vicinity of JN'aseby, as similar objections are raised almost in, every'Goidiield district where land has ' Wn thrown -opeu lor settlement. We , . all kn'p.w there is a : certain class whose ' interests are affected by having the land piis/nnto the hands of small capitalists. ," ~I allude to the.aristocrats. I. must say that I shall feel much disappointed if the promoters of the present movement find much support, 'asil'think the time is now arrived when the working class of Naseby are, alive to.their own interest, and fully ' competent to.judge for themselves. I would venture 'to say there is not another ■dhtrict in-the/Province where land for settlement is so much required at present is it<is'in Naseby. Miners cannot find . employment in, their, claims more than five months in the year. The remainder of the time a great number are compelled to seek employment elsewhere, which must.be very.annoying and distasteful, especially to.married men, who are eomJ jelled to leave their wivus and family berind them. If a block of land be set apart fur settlement within a reasonable . distance of Naseby, it will remedy that evil to a certain extent, as miners with a little capital will have an opportunity of securing'SuluYieiit land to keep them employed daring the dry seasons. Moreover, it being absolutely necessary for " both industries to be combined to enable men with Large families to keep their Leads above water. —I am, <fcc, An Obseevbb. y •■ . =
