(To the Editor of the Mount Ida Cheoniciye.) January 23rd, 1574 Sib,—l wish: to draw the attention of the proper authorities, through the medium of your columns, to the state of the road from .Naseby to the coal pits at Eyeburn.
The Government cutting, which has been lately made at the northern end of the second crossing of the Kyeburn, has been filled up with tailings, and the approaches seamed in every direction with water races.
I happened to have occasion to take.a spring cart down this road the other day, and found that at the bottom' o£ a steep pinch I had to encounter a water race. My load, which was a live one, had to dismount, and the cart and horse had to jump over the obstruction. By perseverance I managed to reach the Government cutting, and found, when there was no retreat, that I had to face a bank of stones and tailings. a Considering that this road has not yet been passed by the Government, and that the old road is destroyed, I should much like to know whether the Government are conferring a favor upon the communityor not.. We had a road which was passable before, but it is now actually dangerous to life and limb. lam now aware that there is a deviation, but I found it out to my sorrow. . I must not conclude this without men-' tioning that the cutting filled up with tailings is not yet passed by the Government; and that if main roads are thus allowed to he run away with water, the contractors' can have no security whatever. .. How. is the-contractor -to be paid for this ? And what is to become of the coal pits when the roads are being destroyed by Government order? The roads to the coal pits were fifty per cent., better six months ago than they ' are now. —I am, &c., Alfbed H. Keene, .. . ' • Mining Engineer.
