;."On taking, office, they found tbe resignation of . Mr.'-Pet'chell had been accepted; - and' that he 'held office onlyuntil the 31st March, ] and considered ic best,'for that short period, ' i not < to;make' any; alterations until the arrival of Mr.: Menzies,; i who -had been appointed schoolmaster by they 1 predecessors. - f On the giving up'charge of the school by Mr. Petchei!, ,the /quarterly report ending /March,;showed .thirty-four< boys and thirty girls on the roll. Shortly, after. Mr. Menzies took charge he a suggested several alterations, which were ap- ' proVed of by your Committee. Attention, by memorial,.having been called to the high rate of fees,; it was resolved that the scale—6s., 45., and 3s. per month, with extras, lir-ing,.pens, ink, &c ; ducedto Cs., 3s. 6d., and2s. 6d.,.without extras The Committee, after careful consideration, came to the conclusion that by adopting this, v scale, theyi would ; meet tho requirements' of parents,, and at the sime time be able to meet all necessary expenses. "They are ; happy to report the change so far has proved successful. • >

In consequence of the increase in f number of children attending the school, it became . necessary to enlarge the class-room;' and, the 1 residence being in a very dilapidated condi-> tion, your Committee applied to the Educa- ! cation Board for £IOO, which was granted. ■ Tenders ; were' called for, and the one for classroom and outbuildings only accepted—the sum of £IOO not being sufficient for both works. Your Committee applied for another £IOO, and received authority to spo.nd £SO. Tenders were called for, and accepted; and, the Committee are happy to say,"Tjoth buildings are now completed, and at the entire cost of the Government. There is 'one thing now to be done—namely, fencing the reserve,- for which,; no doubt, the Board will supply the means. ; Attthe close of the school for the Christmas holidays,': there were on the roll 64 boys, and 50 girls, making a total of 114. When your' Committee were elected' in' January/ 1873,'ther financial state of jtho. school stood thus:. i Mr. Field proposed, m»d Mr. be l Latjtotjk seconded^-"That the Committee's report ho adopted." C.irried. On the motion"f Mr. de Lai'tour. seconded by Mr. Woouuill, a \ ote of thanks was accorded to the retiring Commit, too. , - Mr. Bremser stated that the annual meeting . being the oniy opportunity thfit was afforded ,to the public <>f ancertiiming m,hum's bearing the conduct of tiie schoCH he* would be glad if the Clriirman would furnish any information that might-be asked. He himself was informed that the alteration in the fees was such that there was no inducement for the teachers to exorl themselves, as there was no pro- . portiouate roward^'to"them if the, attendance increased. ~■? In - short, that r there? 'was a fixed limit to salary. , The Chairman explained that the (fees now, ..in. force were the same atr were charged-in Mr. Petchell's time. It was thought that the new Commit-" , tee would be able to do without the twenty per'cent, deduction at present charged, as the ,debt was diminished, although such a large amount of unusual expenditure had been* incurred. The Kev. E. Williams would lite to

;isk a question ; indeed, ,it would save him the trouble of writing, as he had iutonded,■ to the • Secretary' of, ;the-iEdu-1 cation Board. ' Of course he would obey the Chair, should his inquiry be: deemed to be irregular. The question was simply this, Is it allowable or expected* that the Bible . should be read in the schools ? Iu the Nasebv school it,was not read a'tiill. 1 He would be glad to ascertain wnat the icasbn was. Being a parent, of ( two boys attending the school, he felt a great interest in this question. 1 He thought it moat desirable and right 1 to read the Bible, as, indeed, it was rendered compulsory by the Ordinance. In' America the feeling was so intensely keerrof the neces-sity-of the Bible that, in the times of the' Pilgrim Fathers, it was laid down that,,'although a man's property mi^ht isold off', yet his .Bible should uofcbe so*i>£sposed of'.-,, |. 'Com'--mittee had fcaKeniW'Action'in the matter. He believed the Master had re- | ceived- his instructions direct from the Education Board. For his own part, his feelings were'entirely in accordance with what had fallen from JMr. "Williams.

j - y Mr.. .Williams would, then, simply record his -protest, against the action of the Education Board; in ; venturing to over-ride the Ordinance of the Province.

The Committee for the year were then appointed, it being agreed that the number should be nine, and the appointment be made by show of hands: :l'ho gentleman elected were " The Rev. E. Williams, Messrs. jßremrier, Inder, George, Kovvlatt, "Wil-son>-Fields Jas. Hore, and D. Stewart.

Mr. PE Laxjtouk wished to. brins;; before the meeting and the newly appointed Committee the desirability of at once taking steps to obtain a District Grammer School at Naseby. He thought •such-J.aji.institation could be obtained if an keel'for by the people. This should be done at once, by the extensive circulation of .petitions throughout jthe district.

The Chairman stated' that the late Committ.ee' had not lost of this Requirement, which, lio'doubt, the new t GSmmittee .would, give their attention

, t± A vote of thanks to the Chair terminated the proceedings.
