"We are glad to state that the. Government, acting on a suggestion made by Mr. de Lautour, M.P.C., have agreed to place an efficient boat at Marking's Ferry. The letter from the Under-Secretary has been handed to us for publication, and is as follows: Public Works Office (Provincial), Dunedin, 4th Nov., 1873. I have been directed to acknowledge the receipt of ydur letter under date 23rd Oct., 1873, representing the dangerous state of the ford at the Taieri River, between Macraes and Hyde, and to acquaint you that the b-overnment," acting on your suggestion, has agreed to expend the sum of £SO in providing a boat and the necessary gear, to be placed in charge of the ferryman Mardling.
