MACRAES.—Aug. 21.

Resident Magistrate's Court. (Before H;W. Robinson, Esq., KM.) Larceny.—Duncan Eraser, junr., appeared to his oWn recognisance, to answer a charge of stealing one sovereign from the person of one Bicha'rd Eoley, at Shag Valley, on 23rd May. The hearing of this case had been adjourned from Nas'eby for the purpose of allowing further evidence to be adduced. Several witnesses were examined, but very little additional light appeared to be thrown'-on the subject. The Magistrate discharged the accused, with the remark that the prosecutor had given contradictory accounts of how he lost the sovereign, that there was nothing to fasten guilt upon the accused, beyond an alleged admission that he.jhad found the money, and that there was no satisfactory proof thafc he had even made such an admission. '\ Neglected child. Elizabeth Maude Collis was brought up,. charged with being a neglected child, within the meaning of the Neglected and Criminal Children Act, 1867. It appeared that the child, an interesting little girl, about seven years old, was residing with her mother and another woman -in a • hut near the township. Both women were reputed prostitutes, and one of them much given to drink. The hut was' frequented by Chinamen. The child was committed to 'the Industrial School, Dunedin; for a period of seven years, 'to be educated in the faith of the Church of England. Warden's Court. (Before H. W. Kobinson, Esq., Warden.) Agricultural lease applications. The • hearing of the applications of Sir E. D. Bel], and the Canterbury and Otago Association, was adjourned to September 25.
