MOUNT IDA DISTRICT ROADS.
The following extracts are taken from the .report of the District Engineer, Gl S. Duncan, Esq., on the state of the roads in the Mount Ida district, for the quarter ending March, 1873: Macraes to Hyde.—Road in fair condition; A new ford at Taieri river is urgently required, since present crossing is dangerous. Hyde to Kyeburn.—Road at present in passable condition. Contracts are being issued by Road Committee for construction of newparts of road, being deviations from present road. _. The ford at the Taieri would require repairing. West Taieri Bridge to Rock and Pillar.Road in fair condition. There are men engaged in repairing the bad parts of the road; The ford at the Lee's Stream is in a very unsafe state at present,.stones are being quarried to rectify it. Rock and Pillar to Dunstart.—Parts of road fair, while other parts almost impassable. The worst parts of the road are at the Taieri Hill and Devil's Pinch, where there are deep ruts in the solid rock, seemingly the want of proper drainage. There is one man at present repairing road at Devil's Pinch. Palmerston to Eweburn.—Road in very fair condition from Palmera'ton to Waihemo. From Waihemo to the Kyeburn there are several very steep pinches, which might easily be avoided by the construction of sidings; I refer especially to the Coal Creek Hill. The new road round the Houndburn Hill is in a very bad state at present, and mil, from all appearance, bo impassable in the winter time ; it would require to be partly pitched and partly metalled throughout. The crossing of Kyehurn, near Malloch's New House, requires repairing. Road from Eyeburn to Eweburn in very fair condition. Eweburn to Dunstan.—-Road.in very fair condition at present. There are several parts which require to be gravelled. Crowing of a
small creek, near Mrs Beck'B, require 3 to be pitched. The following statement will give our readers an idea of how the roads in the Mount Ida district hare been attended to by the Government; the amount appropriated towards thei maintenance; and the sum expended; and what has lapsed or been transferred : Mount Ida district roads.—-West Taieri Bridge to Kock and Pillar, £2OO appropriated, £192 16s 4d expended, £7 3s Bd.lapsed; Rock and Pillar to Dunstan, £2OO appropriated, £9 2a expended, £l9O 18s lapsed;: Palmerston to Eweburn, £3230 appropriated, £2475 - 4s od expended, £754 15s 7d lapsed; Ewe-.] burn to Dunstan, £550 appropriated, £463 183 9d expeuded, £SS Is Sd lapsed ; :Na<eby to Eden Creek, £220 apijropriated, £67 18a expended, £152 2s lapsed ; Waibemo to Macraes, £SO appropriated. £SO lapsed ; Macraes to Hyde, £SO appropriated, £SO lapse*!; Hyde to,Kyebum, £SO appropriated, £l7 10a expended, £32 30s lapsed ; Ueeks to Dunstan Creek, £6O appropriated, £6O lapsed ; Hyde to Hamilton, £IOO appropriated, £LOO lapsed; Strathtaieri road, £SO appropriated, £SO lapsed ; Koad to Maerewhenua diggings, £IOO appropriated, £IOO expended; Hyde to Hamilton, £IOO appropriated, £IOO lapsed. Koads and Bridges for which payment is to be made in land :—Construction of causeways from Serpentine to Eyeburn Hotel, £6O appropriated, £6O lapsed ; Naseby to coal-pit at Kyeburn Diggings, £250 appropriated, £243 5s expended, 15s lapsed; Maerewhenua to Mount Ida Diggings, £245 appropriated, £245 expended ; Deep Stream bridge, £SOO appropriated, £SOO lapsed; Hyde to Kyeburri. £250 appropriated, £250 lapsed;. Hyde to Taieri Payer, £l5O appropriated, £l5O lapsed; Shag Vailey to Macraes, £SOO appropriated/ £SOO lapsed.
