CORRESPONDENCE.

We do not hold ourselves in any way responsible for the views and sentiments ex•.•••i pressed by correspondents. All communications must be accompanied by the correct name and address of tbe writer, not necessarily for publication, but. as a ; guarantee, of good faith. ' • . (To the Editor of the Mount Ida. Chronicle.) St. Bathans, 9th June, .1872! - Sib, —Whoever writes your note? from St Bathans should not be so ready to put forward his individual ppinions as those of the people generally. In your issue of the Gth, his statements are beautifully calculated* to mislead. In his remarks about Mr Armstrong's chances of support in this part of the district, after trying, his hand at damning by faint praise, he. goes on to say •' tliat there are a few here vvho have the utmost confidence in Mr Armstrong,/.and-, who believe that Mr Mervyn takes.an interest, in political matters apart from honorarium.'' Now, the facts are that many of Mr Armstrong's warmest supporters, are, by no means partial, to Mr IMervyn, and that, however the. .latter may fare, the former will -command a large majority as one of our members, against any candidate. With regard to the assertion that Mr Anndtron" is "charged wjth. allowing.himself to"'be made the tool of an unscrupulous party in the Council," there are not a few here who think the word uiiscrupulous might be more., properly plied to .the other party in the Council. Without pretending to assert that Mr Armstrong is all a representative might be, we feel that, take, him j for all in all,, he, wilL attend better, to' .pur, interests,,than any of the gentle- ' men who are so anxious for "encouragement "to honor us. The very defects which prevent him taking a leading part in the Council, .will cause him to attend more closely to our. interests than any of those once making a name for themselves, would throw us overboard, secure, at the. next, election, of a seat for some other, place. The people of the outlying parts of the district should be especl careful about rejecting one who has done them good service, for others whose greatest recommendation is.an assertion that they will, .support Mr Macandrew.—l <&c., • ;; Xv'-,T:z.
