There were no cases for hearing at the sitting of the Courts on the 6th. In the .Resident Magistrate's Court applications by John Griffiths and Samuel Inder for slaughtering licenses .vere granted. In the Warden's Court the following applications were also granted :—Patrick Talty, for an extended'claim ; Patrick Toomey, extended claim ; Brown and others, a tail race channel at Welshmans Gully; Johnstone and others, a dam ; Kowe and another, protection to a claim. An application by Wood and others for protection to an unwrought claim at Surface Hill was refused, the Warden stating that he could not encourage the taking up of claims by persons who immediately afterwards applied to have them protected from work, as in this instance. The applicants admitted they had done no work in this claim, and that they were aware when they took in up that it was unworkable; and he thought ground of this description should tie .left"for" those who might have sufficient enterprise to attempt to make it workable. It was intimated to Williams and party that the Government would grant them a special claim at Muddy Creek upon certain specified terms j and conditions, but before a grant j could be made, they must have the j land surveyed by the district surveyor.
