From Auckland, the latest Waikato news states that Mackay arrived at Te Kuiti on Tuesday night, having passed Waitanui at Wirea, who asked him to stay there. He pushed on, however, and joined Eewi, where lie now is. Tawhiao is at Hauturu, and a messenger has gone with a letter from him to Mackay. The Kgatimaniopotos will not take part in hostilities unless attacked.
I Further telegrams state, at Kr.iti, while ia bed, Mack ay was attacked by a Hau-Hau, who crawled into the tent. A struggle ensued, Mackay was sligholy wounded -on the temple, and the assailant captured. Manuwhiri and llewi are indignant at the outrage. Government telegrams state it is untrue that Tawhiao refused to give -up Sullivan's murderers. . Mack ay is instructed not to leave Tawhiao. without a definite reply. He ■fears if he consents the murderers of .Whitely and Todd will be aslsed for. The murderers laid Sullivan's heart at Princess Sophia's door. She alic] her husband were very indignant, and instantly buried it. At a large native meeting held yesterday, resolutions were passed denouncing the doings of the ETau-Haiis-—many Waikato chiefs being present. Six influential chiefs were deputed to deiuand the murderers. The meeting asked the Government to countenance their proceedings, and give them time to make their appeal. Intended to improve main roads to. iu terior. Estimates provide larger amount for public works. Government intend to coutinue ■subsidy to road boards, and to subsidise goldfields districts similarly. £24,000 of loan expended on Oamaru breakwaier, a success. £25,000 to be expended ou a tramway up the main valley of the Waitaki. Tenders are being called for. £13,000 set apart to bridge rivers in districts, and for harbor works at Kakauui. iiecomm ends the expenditure of £15,000 for defence of the port. Contract entered into with Patrick Henderson and the Province for immigration from the Clyde. Auld urges direct steam to Otago.
