DRYBREAD.

(From our special correspondent.) The St. Bathans amateur club visited us on Friday, 21st November, kindly giving their' assistance on behalf of our school. A very satisfactory performance resulted in placing about £25 to the credit of the School Committee. We had our first fire here on Tuesday, the 25fch. It commenced in Mr. J. Mellor 8 stables, spreading to those of Mr. Dickie, and entirely destroying the block, together with two race horses, in training for the forthcoming races, and also intended to try their luck at Mount Ida—Merrylass and Coquette. The fire was traced to & washhouse i adjoining the stable, from, the furnace ...of which sparks wereblown among some straw stored in the feed house. There being no water available, owiiig to the parties supplying the town race being washing up; had not the wind been merciful tne whole township must have been" destroyed. As it is, we have learnt a lesson that should not be speedily for-

gotten. . The annual races are to come off on the 2nd and 3rd January, and I anticipate a good muster, aa the amount to be run for exceeds £2OO

Our mining parties are afraid thai; unless the weather changes, wil not he able to carry on work, as thejt hoped, till Christina*.
