He referred at length to the American claims, and said the verdict of the Geneva Tribunal affected the purse and not the bonor of the country. ,He advised England- to pay without grumbling. He should be ready to give a full explanation on the opening of the Parliament. He strongly attacked the slave trade, and remarked the (government resolved to maintain the honor and interest of England, and were desirous to promote peace everywhere. Archbishop Polding and his clergy transmitted to the Pope a telegram, to which the following reply, dated November 9 fch, has been received:—"The*-. Supreme Pontiff receives with great pleasu re the congratulations of the Archbishop with the assembled clergy, and most willingly transmits through the swift electric current the benediction asked lor. :;•

The whole buildings fromV Co to mer cial to Centre streets were destroyed. Other build* ings were blown up to stay the prioress of the flames. The damage already done is to the extent of twohundred millions of dollars, (forty million pounds sterling). The fire is still progressing."
