MISCELLANEOUS.

Sir Thomas'Phillips, whose death was announced in the last Suez telegrams, was a celebrated book-collec-tor at Cheltenham, where he possessed an enormous mansion, as well as one in "Worcestershire. His books do not «eem tohave brought him much happieess, for he left all his best collection to his youngest daughter, on condition that his eldest daughter or her should never enter the house —a pleas-" ant frame of mind for an old gentleman of 80 to die in.
