RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.—May 8.
(Before W. danders, Esq., and W. Q-rumitt, Esq.. J P.) Police v. Alley.—This was an information that Alley had on the same day, about nine o'clock in the foremon violently assaulted Mr. Henry Smythies in the public street by striking him with his fist, knocking him down, and threatening to assault him still more violently with a portion of a shovel handle, which had.evidently been prepared for that purpose Mr. Smythies might have suffered severely had Alley not been overcome by .Bailiff Connolly and Mr. haven, who happened to be present at the time. It appeared that some feeling had for some time past existed on the part of Alley against Mr". Stnythies on account of some alleged sharp professional practice, and he was determined to have satisfaction in some shape before Mr. Smythies (who was about to leave the place) went away. Alley (who is a native of Bengal) was fined 405., or 14 days' imprisonment with hard labor. Police v. G. Brown.—This was a charge of having been drunk and disorderly in the public street on the morning of Sunday last, about half-past one. A further charge of resisting and violently assaulting the police was preferred. From the evidence it appeared that, though a little the worse for liquor, he was not drunk. His conduct had been so violent as to seriously injure one of the arresting constables, who were compelled to call for the assistance of the public before he could be taken iut custody. The police, upon aquestioii being put from the Bench, said that there hud been no previous charge. The Chairman said that it was absolutely necessary .for the public safety that the police siould be protected, and to mark their sense of the conduct of the accused, and as a caution to the public, the Bench had decided to inflict a penalty of £ 10, with the option of 21 days' imprisonmc-nt. .'i
