BARON ROTHSCHILD'S SPORTING GAINS.
: The unprecedented success achieved by Baron Rothschild during the recent season at length finds a permanent record in the pages of the .* Racing Calender.' He stands at the head of winning owners of racehorses, having secured £24,430, or more thau double the amount ascribed to the most successful of his competitors. Hannah, whose earnings exceed half that siim, has won twice as much as Cremorne, who is second in the list of winning horses; and King Tom, also the property of Baron-Rothschild, is accorded first place amongst the sires of the year, his stock having carried oft* prizes to the value of £17,971. Larger amounts have been won by individual owners and their horses; pace Count de Lagrange and Mr. Sutton with teur and Lord Lyon in 1865 and but it had never before fallen to the lot of one man to be first in all three departments. Baron Rothschild owes his success to Hannah (£12.730), Favonius (£5990),.. Corisande (£3610), and Chopette (£L565), the other aci-. mals in his establishment who have winning brackets to their names having contributed only insignificant amounts to the general total. Hannah and Corisande are by Tom King, Chopette is a daughter of North Lincoln, and Favonius is, : like Cremorne, a son of Parmesan.. The latter sire occupies the same position in regard to King Tom that histwo descendants, Cremorne and Favonius, hold in relation to Hannah—the most illustrious of the Ment.more stallion's progeny. Thus, while Parmesan is credited with £15,090 as against King Tom's total of £17,071; Cremorne and Favonius have, earner! £12,169 between tbetn (£6179, and £5990 respectively), as compared to the £12,730 standing to Hannah's credit. Between the naines of Baron Rothschild and Mr. Saville, who is third on the list of winning owners, is, however, interposed that of a gentleman who races under the pseudonym of "Mr Lombard." His indiscriminate purchase of all the high-class animals that come into the market have been so far rewarded that he is recorded the winner of seventy-two races and £10,119; but it is very questionable whether his success is .proportionately comparable with that of Baron Rothschild, who, with a far smaller stud, and by the exercise of patience and judgment iu breeding, has achieved in one season all that a true lover of" racing can desire.
The Coloktajd Osdee.—The Order of St. Michael and St. George, of which | the Hon. Mr Yogel and the Hon. Mr Fitzherbert have been made companions is thus descibed:—The most distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George was instituted by letters patent, dated April 27, 1818, and by the revised statutes of the Order, dated in 1861, it consists of the Soverpign, Grand Master, twenty Knights Grand Cross, twenty Knights Commanders, and twenty-five Companions. . The insignia are the star, inscribed with the motto Auspicium Melloris (Evi; the collar and badge suspended from a watered Saxon blue riband, with a scarlet stripe. An Illustration.—A distinguished divine, on a certain occasion, while preaching with his usual eloquence and power, said, " Brethern, I sometimes illustrate my subject in this manner," and suiting the action to the word, put his handkerchief to his nose, and blew a blast loud enough to wake " the seven sleepers." That; was not the intend* d illustration, but some of his hearers thought that it was.
