ST. BATHANS.—Feb. 23.

HAMI LTON.--Feb. 20.

Resident Magistrate's Court. x (Before E. H. Carew, Esq , R.M.) . Johnstone ( v. M'Phail.—Claim for iB6 10s 6d, balance of wages. Adjourned to next sitting.

Court. (Before E. H. Carew, Esq., Warden.)

.Applications granted.—Manti Wade, protection; William Johnstone, extended claim ; David A. Gardiner, protection ; John S. Foote, protection ; John Brown, protection ; Tiernan, alteration of the Rose, Thistle, and'! Shamrock ehannel; Mountain Water Race Company (registered), protection and alteration of tail race; William H. Wilkes, two water races and a dam at Blaekstone Hill.

■•-"■ ; February 25. (Ehe loirg-desired and much-neeled change in the weather" set in on Wednesday afternoon with a slight shower of rain, but on Thursday evening it came'in earnest, and continued to pour down steadily until Friday morning. Although there has been no rain since then worth speaking of, the atmosphere and hazy appearance presented overhead indicate a further supply, and everyone wishes it may come soon and in abundance, as that which has already fallen, however conducive to the health of the population and growth of the winter's grass for stock, falls far short of satisfying the to us most important want —that of the miner. The want of a bi-weekly mail is much felt here. We send almost as many letters over to Hill's Creek every Friday morning, by special messengers, as leaves by the solitary regular mail of every Monday. I understand that our residents intend petitioning Government, through their representatives, for a second mail in the week.

Mr. Millar, of .Naseby, runs » coach to this place every Thursday, and back to Naseby the following day. This is a great accommodation for persona having to journey one way or the other, and I sincerely wish that Mr. Millar may receive sufficient encouragement to continue his enterprise. St. Patrick's Day will be celebrated here, by a picnic and dance, to come off on Monday, the 18th of March. The dance will be held in the school-room in the afternoon; the picnic will be held during the forenoon on the same spot selected for previous celebration* of the day, and which lies close to the road at the crossing of the Manuherikia, a short distance below the Hawkdun station homestead. When men of other nationalities are found to be not only willing but even anxious to join in the celebration of the Irish national festival, it is not at all likely that Irishmen themselves will be backward in taking their proper places in Buch a celebration. Here, in St. Bathans and its surroundings, I have no doubt that the coming anniversary of Ireland's Apostle will be duly honored by all hands with that unanimity of action and kindly feeling which have characterised all, their other movements. The following gentlemen have been appointed a committee to make arrangements for the celebration :—Messrs °T. Webb, W. Pyle, junr., J. M'Namara. Thos. Mulvey, P. M'Caffry, G. P. G-il-more, P; Hanrahan, J.Stewart, Wm. M'Connochie, and P. Kenny. The question of laying water on to the township as a protection against fires is now again being mooted. It is supposed that the work can be finished for about £3OO,- and that the money would be .forthcoming if all the residents agree-to pay so much per week until the £3OO, with a trifling interest on same, be refunded—payments then to cease, except such trifle as might be required for keeping the work in repair. Now, if this be true, the terms are remarkably easy, and, if not complied with, we may one day or other, find ourselves imitating the ridiculous conduct of the ancient party who locked the stable door after the horse had been stolen.—A.B.C.

Warden's Court. t . (Before IT.' Robinson, Esq.,, Warden.)
