THE Mount Ida Chronicle FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1871.

We understand that a gentleman has re cently arrived here for the purpose of establish" ing himself as a professor of music. This will doubtless supply a want long felt in this district, and we trust that the residents will accord their active support to an art which in so many ways is capable of contributing to their amusement- and gratification. The Home telegrams, received by the last Suez mail contain no item eiiherof importance or interest.

The annual general meeting of the shareholders of the Naseby Water Works Company is appointed to take place at the office, Earn street, on Wednesday next, 15th inst. Thk English mail, vi-i San Francisco, will close here on Monday, the 20th instant, at the usual hour.

We have been requested by Captain Inder to acknowledge the receipt of £IJ from the Secretary of the Gurrick Club, being proceeds of an entertainment recently given in aid of the funds of the Fire Brigade, and to coavey to the club the thanks of the Brigade for the seasonable addition to their funds. We have been further requested to return the thanks of the Brigade to the Ntiseby Brass Band for thoir valuable services and assistance on the evening of the U-arriek Club's entertainment.

. An advertisement appears in another column having reference to the payment of subscriptions in order to enable to vote at annual meeting* of subscribers to the Hospital Fund.

The first meeting of the General Committee of the Mount Ida ilospital is announced to take place in George's Victoria Hall on the 13th inst.

In the report of the Mount Ida Jockey Club meeting, which appeared in our last issue, an error crept in, which wo desire to take the very eariiest opportunity of correcting. Instead of Mr. VV. Inder, President, in the chair, read Vice-President —Mr. J. A. Douglas having been President since the starting of the club to the present time, and continuing still to hold that office.

The result of the ballot for the election of the Managing Committee f jr the Presbyterian Church disclosed the names of the following gentlemen as those to whom the largest number of votea had been given :—Wilson, Jackson, J. S. M'lntosh, Glenn, Alexander, Jiremner, > Barron, Young, Millar, Baird, Eccles, Smith, H. B. M'lntosh, Creighton, Sanders, ftodgara, Inder, Gillespie, Morrison, and J. Stewart. We have since been informed that Mr. Inder will not be able to act as a. member of Committee, though he will be willing to assist them so far as he may have it in, his power to do. A gkeat convenience will be afforded to ths

residents along the line of road between Palmerston and the Waihemo Hotel by the placing on the road a couch, by Mr. Liiks, to run between those places dai.'y at the moderate fare of ss. We trust that Mr. Luks' enterprise may be rewarded. The fame of our Garrick Glub has readied St. B.ithans, and the inhabitants of that place invited the company to give an entertainment there in aid of the funds of the Mount Ida District Hospital. The members of the Club left yesterday morning, and the entertainment was to have taken place, and, we doubt not, did take place last evening. The programme •was precisely the same as was played, and successfully phiyed, here on a recent occasion. Of the general ability of the members of the Club we have before had occasion to speak in the most favorable terms, and we doubt not that in acting, as in everything else, practice will make perfect. The cause in aid of which the entertainment was given is a good one, and one which should commend itself alike to the-sym-pathy and support of all persons of all classes.

A lecture by Mr. H. A. Stratford, in aid of the funds of the Nasehy Sabbath School is advertised to take place in the Masonic Hall on the evening of Friday, the 24th inst. The subject of the lecture is to be, " A character lost and regained, or the adventures of an old sailor." Mr. Stratford is well known as a successful lecturer, and as the subject is a favorite one with him, w.e have no doubt but that he will handle it in an able as well as an agreeable manner. Before, during, and after the lecture there will be selections of music, on the piano, by Messrs. 11. A. Stratford, W. Grrumitt, and A. Kolland. The latter gentleman is spokeu of in the highest terms as being a pianist of the first order, so that the lovers of music have every reason to expect a treat. Yestekday being the anniversary of the birth of the Prince of Wales, neither the Government offices nor the banks were opened for business. These institutions, however, appeared to be the only ones in ■which " loyalty" was discernible.. Not a single flag was displayed in the town, and the day passed off just. as though there was no such thing as royalty or royal princes in the world, or if there were, that the people did not care anything about them. We must except the excursion of the Garrick Club to St. Bathaus, whither they went by invitation to give an entertainment in aid "of the'funds'of the embryo Mount Ida' District Hospital..

A meeti-vo- of' the Care w Testimonial Subcommittee took place at George's Victoria Hotel, on t-aturday last. Mr. W. Inder in the chair. A letter from Mr. Strong, jeweller, was read, and after the transaction of some other business, it was resolved to call another meeting qf.the General Committee which would be held at the Victoria Hotel this evening, at eight p.m. .

A meeting of the Hospital Committee was held in the Victoria Hall on the evening of h riday last. Present— Messrs. George, M'lntosh inder, Stratford, Grumitt, Hertslet, and Brookes. Mr. Stratford was elected to take the chair. The Secretary read a Circular.addressed by himself to the members of the Committee, requesting their attendance at the first general meeting, on the 13th inst. The Chairman asked if any intimation had been given by the Secretary of the meeting to-night. The Secretary said that such had not been done, as the meeting was more of a preliminary chara= ter than anything else. The Chairman suggested that, with so few members present, it would be unwise to proceed to business. Mr Grumitt moved, and Mr. Hertslet seconded, that the meeting be adjourned till the 13th, and that the Secretary advertise such meeting in the 'Chronicle'. Carried.. The property known as the New Orleans Dining-rooms was last night offered for sale, by public auction, by Messrs. Inder and George, when there being no bid over £lls it was withdrawn, the auctioneer stating that he would be willing to treat privately for the property. It must be gratifying to the residents of the Goldfields to know that the cost of living has been materially reduced by the use bt Flour from the Mill of Kobertson and Hallenstein, Lake Wakatip, which is by far the best produced in the Province, and' fully equal to the best Adelaide ; whilst same is delivered to all parts of the Goldfields at a much cheaper rate than any other Provincial brands. Orders sent to 1.. Hallenstein and Co., Oi'omwull, will be promptly attended to— Adv.
