THE Mount Ida Chronicle. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1871.

Tub receipt of a large amount of matter a * late hour compels us reluctantly- to hulci oveuutil our next issue our usual lea>.ler aud many items of" local interest, such as the report of the Courts at Hyde, Macraes, and Maerewhev Thk reports Upm Clark's Diggings are of a highly satisfactory nature. The population consist* of about 100 souls, nearly equally diTided between Europeans'* and' the " Heathen

Chinee." From all we can hear, every one ! appears to be satisfied with Iris-earnings, and j a very successful seasou is anticipated. Av advertisement in another column shows . that the water companies consider their properties to be so insecure under the present Goldfields Acts and Regulation*, as to render J it necessary that they aiioula form themselves j into a Union for the purpose ot supporting an I I f>rotecting their own interests. As a rule, we j iave a decided objection to anything in the j shape of combination or monopoly. Still, the } interests of the water companies in ra?es and j dums must be something very important, and if the law offers them, as they assert, no pro-: tection, they have every right to protect th.-m- j selves. Still, we should much have preferred j to have seen an eif'ort mad.? to improve and ' amend the law, rather than the formation of a combination such as that entered into among the water companies. We consider that action such as they have adopted should only have djejjn taken as a last resource. *A fresh notification appears in the last ■ ' Provincial Government Gazette,'- to the ef- i feet that the first meeting of the contributors j to the Mount Ida Hospital, "situate at Naseby," will be Held at the Oddfellows' Hall, on ' luesday next, the Slst instant, at 12 o'clock noon. Again are we compelled most reluctantly to call attention to the extremely careless manner in which the duties of the Government are performed by persons well paid for their services, anil wiio ought not only to know their duties, but be able also to perform them. In the first place, the slightest enquiry would have informed the Government that there is not only no hospital ''situate in the town of Naseby," but no institution of the kind within the length and breadth of the Mount Ida District, while common sense should have pointed out that a more inconvenient time than the hour of noon for the meeting of working men, such as we hope the subscribers to the Hospital will be, could not very easily have heen fixed upon. The indifference and ignorance displayed by the Government in all matters connected with the Hospital movement here have been sufficient to disgust the best friends of Provincialism with their favorite bantling. *«^ We desire to remind all persons interested that a meeting for the purp.seof receiving the report of the Provisional Committee and electa new Committee' of Management, for the Presbyterian Church, wdl take place this evening, at the Masonic Hall at 8 o'clock p.m. The St. Bathans Annual Race Meeting has been decided to be held on the 26th anil 27th ot December next. Nothing further than a preliminary notice has yet appeared ; still, from the well know pluck of the St. Batlian ites, there is no reason to expect ;iny o*dier than good horses, good prizes, good sport, and good hum >r on the occasion. We may, we think, congratulate our St. Bathans friends on having made a very suitable selection of days for their meeting, following immediately, as it. does, that time of the year when men's purees are more than usually full; and their hearts more than usually open. We sincerely trust that the meeting may be in every way a success.

The alteration in the days for holding Resident Magistrate's and Warden's Courts will be found in the fourth page. Thk agitation in favor of the extension of the Dunedin and Clyde mail service to Cromwell has brought forth the following telegram, which (says the ' Cromwell Ar g us') has been received by Mr. Michaelis Fraer: —"The contractor (Chaplin) demands £6OO a-year extra to break his present contract, which has two years to run. There is little hope of getting (he Government to agree to this in the present state of 4he finances." Who the sender of the above telegram may be our authority aailh not.

In the Resident Magistrate's Court, Naseby, on tiie 23rd instant, before 11. W. Kobinsmi, E <j . R.M , the fullowing cases were disposed oi : —Gason v. Money : Claim, £7 9s. 3d. Judgment for £7 ss. 9d. and 13s. costs, to be paid by instalments of 10s. per week.—Franks and M'Kemu v. fagett: Claim, £3. Judgment for amount with costs.

Ouh local talent showed very prominently forward last evening, when the Mount Ida Garriek Club gave an entertainment, in aid of the funds of the Fire Brigade. Ttie late hour at which the performance closed, precludes the possibiity of our giving anything hke an elaborate critique of the Club's doings. Still, we are glad to be able to state thai the very favorable opinion expressed by us of the talent and ability of the members of the Club generally has been fully confirmed. The House was a very good one, and the various pieces put upon the stage were so put in a theatrical and artistic manner. The Mount Ida Garriek Club bids fair to be not. only a Bource of amusement, but an honor to the district.

Wit notice with pleasure that a meeting of the friends of Mr. Warden Carew will be held at George's Victoria Hotel, on the evening of Monday next, in order to determine the best method of conveying to that gentleman a recognition of his valuable services during the period of his connection with this district as an officer of the District, Resident Magistrate's, and Warden's Courts at Naseby.
