THE NORTHERN TRUNK RAILWAY.

The following is a copy of the petition adopted by the settlers of Palmerston, Shag Valley and surrounding districts, against the proposed construction of a branch line of rail, between Waitaki and Waikouaiti, to which reference is made in our leading article of to-day : Unto the Honorable the Speaker and Members of the Provin-

cial Council, Province of Otago. The petition of the undersigned residents of Palmerston, settlers and landowners in the Shag Valley and surrounding districts: HumVly sheweth—■ That a great injustice is about to be done to the districts north of Dunedin by arranging for the construction of the North Trunk line of railway to commence at the extreme end of the Province, and to stop short at Waikouaiti.

That the practical result of such a course would be to draw the Otago traffic northwards to the metropolis in Canterbury. That a great loss and inconvenience would arise to the Otago settlers north of Dunedin from the want of direct railway communication with the great port of shipment and centre of commerce.

That, by commencing the Northern Trunk Railway at the Dunedin end, a great, saving would be effected by using the line for carrying the plant, <fcc., as it progressed. That the Otago Province north of lhinedin is the chief grain producing district of the Province, and besides abounds in valuable minerals, thus insuring a large and important traffic to the proposed line, by railway, via Palmerstoti; and your petitioners view with alaru'; that your Council contemplate the construction of certain branch lines of railway prior to the construction and completion of the Main Trunk line through the Province : And Your petitioners humbly pray that your Honorable House will not sanction the construction of any branch line of railway until the Main Trunk line has been constructed, which your petitioners understand to be the spirit and intention of the Railway and Public Works Act. [ And your petitioners will ever pray.
