Dunedin, Thursday afternoon

The members of the Provincial Council were entertained at luncheon on board the mail steamer Nevada by the officers on Tuesday last.

The usual after-dinner complimentary speeches were made on the occasion.

The Otago University was opened yesterday at three p.m. Major Richardson, the Chancellor, read the inaugural address, which was a masterly production. A social gathering, in connection with the opening, was held in the University Hall in the evening. Among the speakers were Judge Chapman, Professor -Sale, the Hon. J. M'Lean, Kevs. Messrs. Will and Copland. Th? whole affair was the greatest possible success. The number of students enrolled was 31.
