NEW ROAD FROM PIGROOT TO NASEBY.
(To the Editor of the Mount Ida Chronicle.) ■ Kyeburn, March 11, 1870. Slit,- —I see that you recommend for the new road from Pigroot to Naseby to pass by the fc ot of the Ka Ka nui ranges, passing Messrs. Sanders'station, and on into Naseby. -You also state that you have been over the country more so than the surveyor, Mr. Oliver, and consider it a much better line than that mentioned by Mr. Oliver. JSTow, I also have been over the country, not once, but a good many times, and would have no objections to "go over again, if you would take the walk with me. I then could show you that that line, especially in wet weather, is nothing but bog holes, to say nothing about steep pinches, and five or six feet of snow in the winter. I; was speaking lately to an old experienced waggoner, who told me he haa tried that road with
an empty waggon, and it was all that lie could do to get through; he also stated that he was pretty certain that the carters in general would go the old road to the Duns tan, &c., sooner than have the long drag so as to go through Naseby. lam not aware who the deputation were composed of who waited upon his Honor the Superintendent on this subject, but I do think they could not have been over the line before they left for Dunedin, or they would have * seen plenty of " rolling ridges " in which to ply the pick and shovel ; neither could they have seen Mr. Oliver's line, who has been over it. We must also consider the vast difference of money required in the construction of each line, £6OOO or £7OOO and £2OO. If you consider the above worth space in your paper, its insertion will much oblige, yours &c., Majtuxa.
