SCHOOL GALA DAY

AN ENJOYABLE FUNCTION. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions, the school gala day hold ait Ihe local District High School, yesterday afternoon, was an unqualified success. There was a. large attendance of the public and the children, in their fancy costumes, ga,ve an added note of joy to the proceedings. The teaching staff and their wives were kept busy, both before and during the proceedings. Parents in response to a circular appeal were generous in gift's of produce, cakes, etc. Stalls for the sale of these articles were presided over by teachers and scholars and a clearance was effected. The ice cream stall was 'kept, particularly busy and pennies were quickly exchanged for (lie well-filled cones. Afternoon tea was dispensed in the secondary school and was well patronised, the staff being kept on the run. In the open a life-saving display wax given by a. squad of High School boys and Hie efficiency with which this work was earned out reflected credit upon the squad and their instructor, Mr A. Robbie. The exhibition of eurythmics by a number of girls in charge of Miss Bindon, called forth hearty applause. The parade of boys and girls in fancy costumes, decorated bicycles, prams, etc., was very spectacular and created amusement and interest. A heavily-laden Christmas tree was in charge of Father Christmas and each child received a suitable gift. The headmaster (Air. F. .A. Mason) and his staff are to he congratulated upon the success and smooth running of the effort. The following are the results of the various events and competitions: — Dinner: Miss E. Girls. —Zena Fraser (Sir Francis Di-aike), 1; Nola Martin (Peasant Girl), 2. A special prize for fancy dress was awarded Blanche Thompson (“Hiawatha”). Best Decorated Bicycle. —‘Billy Ross. Beat Decorated Pram. —Iris Raupi. ‘Horse and Trap,—Erie Easton. Slow Bicycle Race, — Jack Irons. Obstacle Race, —Alfred Fowler. Dual Relay,—Joan Barron and Newton Baitkiey.
