The Eoxton Surf and Life Saving Club patrolled the ocean beach where a number of bathers enjoyed a dip in the “briny.” An aeroplane visited the resort during the afternoon from Feilding and returned in the evening. An interesting exhibit is to he seen in Invercargill. It is a piece of wood which 135 years ago formed ipart of the hull of the Endeavour. This vessel was wrecked el. Dusky Sound in 1795, and lias been under water ever since. A diver recently retrieved a small portion of the hull. Considering that d was for oyer a century lying at the bottom of the sea, it took polish remarkably well. The relic will he iven to the .-Southland Museum.

A party of Wellington motorists who took the main road to Wanganui on the u]) trip and decided to give 'themselves a change ol scenery by coming home last evening through the Akatarawa, ran into a had patch of trouble. Following heavy vain a slip came down across the road in its hush section; the driver missed the warning notice, rounded a bend sharply, and rammed his car hard into the soft mud and broken rock of the slip. Fortunately for everyone, the ear missed. boulders and heavy wood, hut it was so thoroughly stuck that it had to he dug out. ‘The hack tires were ruined by the gruelling given them before I lie machine was hacked out and turned again for the main road.
A large sedan ear belonging to Mr. T. VS. Madge, of l-’alnierston N., narrowly escaped being submerged'in the rive if foretlre nighl on Sunday. Mr. Madge drove bis ear around the Point at the beach !o picjki up his outboard motor. The ear was left standing some time and when |Mr. .Madge made to drive off with the trailer attached, quick sand was encountered and the rear wheels dug in until the differential was embedded. The ear was right on the water’s edge and the tide was making- fast. It appeared at one time as il' the vehicle would have to he abandoned, but a shovel and planks' were requisitioned and witli the assistance .of a number of willing helpers tinear was extricated just as the water commenced to lap the near running board. The seductive “weed!” At Lambeth Conference an unqllicial census revealed that of one hundred Bishops ninety-eight were smokers, and some of them very heavy ones! Well, why notf After all bishops are a good deal li'ke other men and it they lind a smoke “‘grateful and comforting’’ amid all the harry and stress of modern life (from which not even Bishops are exempt) is that very surprising? Tobacco may have its faults, hut they are far out-numbered by its virtues.' The great thing is to see that it is pure. Brands poisonous with, nicotine (as some of the foreign ones arc) should be carefully avoided. They spell ruined health if smoked, habitually. Toasted tobacco is the purest because toasting expels the nicotine and renders it safe to smoke to any extent, besides giving it its peculiarly tine aroma and delicious flavour. There are only four brands of toasted manufactured —“Riverliead G-old,” “Navy ‘Out. No. 3,” “Cut. Plug No. 10,” and “Cavendish.” They are in constant demand and on sale everywhere.— Advt. 152.
